Fantasy and Science Fiction: The Human Mind, Our Modern World was my first introduction to MOOC and Coursera. It was a wonderful experience to reread many stories from my youth with new perspectives. Prof. Rabkin provided a very structured and well defined course format. The introduction video, read weekly material, construct an essay providing a thoughtful observation, view the video lectures, review fellow essayists became a 10 week cycle. Each week, a new SciFi or Fantasy book was presented and explored. A local study group provided a more human connectedness to the course material discussions. I would recommend trying to get involved with a local study group if you take this course.
Al Filreis has created an inviting course which introduces the participant to Modern & Contemporary American Poetry. Much thoughtful effort has gone into the design of this course. It is recognized and greatly appreciated. The video lectures present a very close read of key poems. They provide a wonderful dialogue with the TAs and a feeling that the viewer is across the table from the discussion. The quizzes are clear and reinforce the course content. I've found the peer reviewed essay format very enjoyable. It allows a conversation with classmates which adds insight into the interpretation of the poem. The special activities like live webcasts and facebook interactions from the instructor and TAs provide an extra feeling of connectedness and commitment. The effort and involvement by the entire ModPo Course community is appreciated. I highly recommended course.
This was a very enjoyable course. It provided clear and insightful narratives of key events in world history. The video lectures were well prepared. And, the quizzes reinforced key points from the lecture.
The instructors are clear and articulate. They provided meaningful examples, quizzes and assignments to guide and reinforce the lessons. I enjoyed taking the course and would highly recommend it to anyone interested in python programming.
