The instructors for this course employed a style to their videos that was crisp, fun, energetic, and consistent with their topic domain. For that alone, I would recommend the course. I won't be completing the assigned work for the course, but I have learned a good deal from the primary videos and the recommended secondary resources. My classmates in this course include some incredibly talented people who are committed to one or other facet of storytelling and it was a wonderful experience to look at some of their work product. Brilliant!
I am glad that I completed this course. For the first several weeks I was unsure as to whether or not to pursue the course, but "Prof. Andy" provided a curious and informative set of lectures and readings that won over my commitment. Most of the content was new for me. With careful notetaking, the weekly examinations provided a good set of challenges for retention and comprehension of the material. I was surprised by some of the strong opinions voiced in the Discussion Forums, but for the most part the forums were useful and informative. Since the end of the course, I have added a more detailed textbook on the domain to my library shelves, one that I would not otherwise have considered otherwise.
A stunningly comprehensive introductory course, with wonderful lectures, one of the best neuroscience textbooks I have examined (it is a recommended text, not a required one), an extremely attentive TA in the Discussion Forums, and challenging examinations. The weekly time commitment for the course is significant. This might turn away some potential students. However, if you can't meet the time commitment, the course is full of gems of knowledge for the more selective eye.
A wonderful course! It makes accessible the poems of the era that give the course its title, as well as providing an analytic for finding understanding in the poetry. The approach by the Instructor and his student TAs is, in a word, awesome. This approach reflects the welcoming attitude of the Kelly Writers House on campus at Penn. Requires a substantial amount of time to best appreciate the material, but it is well worth it. Highest recommendation.
I am auditing this course. I am impressed with the coverage provided by the professor and his easy manner of presenting what might otherwise be quite dense material. The assessments seem fair and the discussion forum is lively. A fair and nice way to learn about these topics.
I am enjoying this course far more than I expected to enjoy it. The lectures are thoughtful, conceptually complete, and emplaced in a good module structure. The instructor is engaging, the exams are challenging, and the supplementary materials that can be pulled in from other sources are good.
Strongpoints: The content was useful. The instructor did well in presenting the material in lecture format. She was very clear in her presentation. Weakpoints: Did not take advantage of the online format to distinguish it from being more than a proxy for classroom lectures. Suggestion: If the instructor had a couple of student assistants to help develop the online community and to drop in additional formats to make the lecture format more flexible, the next version of this course would easily earn one or two more stars!
Alas, I un-enrolled after the first day, as the course did not seem ready to roll. WIll look for it should it be repeated in the future.
A wonderful course. Did not have the maths to complete the exams, so I audited the course. Thoughtful lecturer and good content, ranging from the easy to appreciate to discussions that I had no real idea as to what was being presented, but hung through it with a good deal of interest. The instructor was a game participant in live webcasting, which is always a nice feature of a MOOC course, even though he seemed to be in learn-as-we-go mode! No problem there. He handled it well. A wonderful learning experience. Background in the maths and physics that form the basis of astronomy definitely need to compete for a certificate of completion. However, can be taken just for the enjoyment of learning the material.
An excellent course that delivered as promised. Fresh and contemporary examination of features of neuroscience in 2013. Excellent use of a textbook (recommended, but not required). Instructor and staff very flexible in dealing with student requests. (As a lagniappe, a bit of a curiousity for people who enjoyed the teevee series "Numbers".) Pleased to give it the highest rating and to recommend it to others should it be offered a second time.
The instructor made this course what is was - a great experience. He demonstrated a comfort with the material and a comfort in presenting this material to us in a friendly, fun, and informative manner. His strong commitment to teaching and to making the coursera format as accessible as possible for as broad a group of people as possible was readily present with each lecture, office hour, and discussion-forum commentary. I would highly recommend this course and this instructor for your consideration.
