Course Description

This course provides education and training for EMS healthcare workers who may have need to transport a patient with a serious communicable disease like Ebola. Learners will increase their knowledge of serious communicable diseases and will have a better understanding of operational considerations associated with patient management and transport.

Objectives

  • Increase healthcare worker knowledge and understanding of serious communicable diseases (smallpox, SARS, MERS, Ebola, novel influenza).
  • Increase understanding of standard and transmission-based infection control procedures.
  • Describe administrative and environmental controls that will decrease the likelihood of inadvertent exposure to infectious bodily fluids to include donning and doffing of PPE, configuration of the ambulance to protect environmental surfaces and facilitate decontamination and disinfection of the vehicle.

  • Describe administrative and environmental controls that will decrease the likelihood of inadvertent exposure to infectious bodily fluids to include donning and doffing of PPE, configuration of the ambulance to protect environmental surfaces and facilitate decontamination and disinfection of the vehicle.
  • Describe waste management and post-mission health monitoring.
  • Allow learners to practice the donning and doffing of PPE under the direct supervision of faculty that have experience with transport and management of patients with serious communicable disease.

Target Audience: This course is ideal for workers who may be at risk for exposure to Ebola and other serious communicable pathogens in the emergency responders, healthcare, and public health workplaces.
