Course Description

In this project-based course, you’ll gain instructional evaluation and design experience by engaging in a real-world project to evaluate and revise existing instructional materials on OER Commons. The free, open educational resources you’ll evaluate and revise will support underserved adult basic education programs. This service course is facilitated by Designers for Learning, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in the United States that coordinates service-learning opportunities for those looking to gain experience creating instruction to support important social causes. Upon successful completion of this course, you’ll receive an instructional evaluation service badge and a certificate of recognition.

Objectives

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • Evaluate existing instructional materials to determine whether the design is effective and efficient in meeting the needs of the learning program.
  • Revise instructional materials to improve the following aspects:
    • Instructional strategies and assessments.
    • Learner experience features (directions and help, aesthetics of display, lesson sequencing, and overall ease of use).
    • Affective considerations (arousing curiosity, establishing relevance, offering appropriate level of challenge, and maintaining learners’ attention)
    • Display features (images, graphics, audio, animation, video, or print materials)

Target Audience: The target audience includes those seeking professional development experience in instructional design, as well as those interested in supporting adult basic education.
