Awesome guide to learn the basics... lack of some "project oriented" tutorial...

Really great course. I feel that there were a few things I understood from previous MVC experience that a complete beginner might have had a tough time with, but I feel like I learned a lot.

I really enjoyed Rails for Zombies because the difficulty level really hit the mark. I had to think about my answers, but the program wasn't so hard as to put me off from finishing. I'll be doing Rails for Zombies 2 soon.

The class was fun and informative. Reading about rails and watching screen casts had left gaps in my knowledge. The courses' combination of screen casts and actual interactive problem solving seems to be the formula I need to really start to learn and understand rails.

I'm completely new to Rails (and Ruby for that matter) but I have to say, I walked away from this one course feeling like I was ready to start a Rails project! =) I love the CodeSchool.com format, and I'm looking forward to completing all of the courses! Thanks CodeSchool.com (And thanks Mom & Dad for the subscription! =) Sincerely, Thom Porter

The course goes nicely through the basics. I have done it with 'Agile web development with rails' by the side and I found it very complementary. 'Learning by doing', truly.

I've done both the original RfZ and this new Redux. I'm glad I did, as there is a lot going on in Rails and I'm sure I didn't get everything I should have out of the original. My second time through I grokked a *lot* more content. Anyway, other than a few hicups in some of the notes (nothing major, but some things could have been clearer, which I've been told will be addressed in a future release) this was extremely informative, and I'm sure I'll be coming back and using the slides as a reference as I build my first few apps. Good job!

RfZ rally helped me to start with RoR development. It is very clear for a newbie but still very dense of useful stuff. The zombiefication adds a lot of fun!

I've never programmed with Ruby before, but I found the videos and exercises super easy to follow. I also feel more confident about learning the Ruby language (as a hobby -- I'm not a professional programmer by any means C:). I'd definitely recommend this course to beginners.

Much more clear than the previous Rails for Zombies. But maybe I'm just becoming more familiar with Ruby and Rails? I would like to see a bit more explanation about routes, but overall, a great course!

I'm learning about ruby on rails as I'm going to be studying an online software engineering module which uses it. I found the videos covered the entire MVC pattern and each section was a sensible length. I enjoyed the videos as they were able to present things one at a time without being overwhelming. All of the slides are available for download which is great as I found going over them helped me take the information in better.

This course is great, very fun and helpful when learning Rails, but for a newbie like me, I had to go through the whole course 5 or more times and include supplementary learning from various other sources, without which I would have understood nothing from this course. For example: what is a hash? what does REST mean? not knowing the basics made my first run through very confusing. Then again, it's just like university: you get the gist from the lecturer and you have to fill in the rest of the picture yourself with extra study.

Never having been exposed to Rails development, I found this a great way to learn and look forward to more Rails courses. I would like it if the exercises worked through an actual Rails project from start to finish. That's probably a bit much for this one course, but maybe it could be combined into several courses tied to one another.

The video lectures and labs were excellent. They did they job and exceeded my expectations for online learning. It gets you familiar with the syntax and the top-level concepts were explained really well. Kudos to Mr. greg for teaching in a clear tone that was easy to listen to. It's definitely up to the end- user, however, to re-iterate over these lessons to solidify these concepts for long-term retention. I would recommend this course. For the code labs, definitely make use of the downloadable slides as that will deter you from clicking the hint links. My suggestion for future users is so either re-watch the video or look over the slides and really make use of these SHORT labs. Just hitting hint because you cannot easily recall what was in a lesson is a cheap way to learn. on the technical side, I found that the url requests to skip to a certain section of a video lecture took a long time, but I might be incorrect in thinking that t... The classes were well structured, excellent delivery and relevant labs. Overall, an amazing course. One constructive point of criticism: I felt like I needed to see the overall picture, as someone who has never built an application. Some things came out of the blue (Controller, Models, etc). If I knew how all those fit together, conceptually, the lessons would be more in context. I think this would broaden the scope to newbies like myself. Regards, - Alan

This class jumped right in to Rails, covering Models, Views, and Controllers. It didn't give me much of a high-level overview at the beginning, and I wondered if I was missing something. The instructor mentioned that you should check out TryRuby if you're not familiar with Ruby, but I don't think that will provide sufficient background. Perhaps try the Ruby track at Codecademy. Also, check out the online tutorials for Rails at guides.rubyonrails.org and railstutorial.org. Once I had gotten a little more background, I was able to make it through the course without too much difficulty. The video stuttered a lot for me, which it does not at, say, Udacity. I also needed to download the slides because each video segment would cover a few different techniques before you got a chance to try them, and I would forget some by the time it was my turn to type. I prefer the Codecademy style of letting you try each new concept immediately. Still, ... This class jumped right in to Rails, covering Models, Views, and Controllers. I prefer the Codecademy style of letting you try each new concept immediately. Still, it beats most traditional university courses. The zombie stuff is just set dressing, although it does make the experience distinctive. For my taste, though, I wish Code School would spend a little less time on the decor, and a little more time on explaining the big picture. This course was free, but follow up courses require a subscription. I haven't been persuaded to pony up the cash, but it's worth checking out to see if you feel different.

An excellent entry point regarding RAILS, with great content, great speaker and... great music :-). A LOT of blood and brains scattered around though - but that's what zombies do, after all.
