The app is known as Hour of Code, and in just one hour you can allow yourself to interactively explore how to create code. Free online classes are also offered to expand your knowledge and sharpen your coding skills. Just take Michael Perry, for example. Codecademy has delivered a solid introduction to Ruby, assuming you just need to know the basics. The course is suitable for a first-timer and doesn't explore advanced concepts in much depth, but it does give you a solid foundation to build on. You will need to supplement your instruction here with larger projects, but if you're a beginner, this is where I would start.

I'm taking this Course with CS2.1x SaaS from UC Berkeley in eDX. The course required basic understanding of Ruby and it suggested Codecademy as the place to go if I were a Ruby newbie. I have to admit I completed all the Programming Assignments in Ruby just from this Codecademy tutorial. A must take if you are a Ruby beginner.

A super introduction to Ruby syntax. The course covers the main aspects of the language allowing you to begin writing your own basic programs as well preparing you for further study such as Coursera's excellent Programming Languages class taught by Dan Grossman of the University of Washington or edX's excellent SaaS classes taught by Armando Fox and Dave Patterson. In preparation for the SaaS classes it might be worthwhile taking the Codecademy course on HTML/CSS and JavaScript as well.
