Course Description

Instructors:  Jim Fowler, Bart Snapp, Jenny George
School:  The Ohio State University
Calculus is about the very large, the very small, and how things change. The surprise is that something seemingly so abstract ends up explaining the real world. Calculus plays a starring role in the biological, physical, and social sciences. By focusing outside of the classroom, we will see examples of calculus appearing in daily life. This course is a first and friendly introduction to calculus, suitable for someone who has never seen the subject before, or for someone who has seen some calculus but wants to review the concepts and practice applying those concepts to solve problems. One learns calculus by doing calculus, and so this course encourages you to participate by providing you with: * instant feedback on practice problems * interactive graphs and games for you to play * calculus projects and demos you can try at home * opportunities for you to explain your thought process

Absolutely loved it. I took this course just for fun as I'm well past college days and working full time as a professional but I just wish my college calculus math teacher was half as fun as Jim. I probably would have gone on for a math major or something.

I tried this based on the outstanding reviews. Well, the structure hás changed. The instruction is still superb, but lectures apparently were cut or misplaced when it was restructured from one larger scheduled course to several smaller self paced courses. So at least early on, the quizzes may not cover at all what was discussed in lecture. If you are using this to review recent material or help study for a course in progress, you probably won't care. But if this is the first calculus for you and you want to really understand and be tested, or it is a review of something you did long ago, you may wish to look a bit more. I hear Fowler is working on a new course on different platform- Chimera or Ximera.

Well organised, and well taught. Jim puts in a lot of energy and enthusiasm in his lectures. Multiple intuitive approaches are presented for each concept, along with their uses in practical world. The free textbook that was made for this course is really useful too.

I really enjoyed this course - it's extremely well taught, engaging, and provides an excellent review of calculus. The instructor is fun to watch and clearly loves teaching calculus. You can also tell that he has a lot of experience as an instructor and has refined his explanations to ensure that they will communicate the concepts in the best way to promote a real understanding. The quizzes use a math software and it's cool that it is able to translate whatever you type in to determine whether or not it is equivalent to the instructor's answer. For example it understands that 5^2 = 25, so you can enter that value either way. The quizzes are also pretty challenging, really college-level in that they are extrapolations of the lessons and not just rote repeat-it-back-to-me.

Calculus One is a comprehensive introductory calculus course that covers everything you'd expect in a first year university calc class: limits, derivatives, integrals and applications for both. The instructors have a lot of passion for the subject and provide plenty of examples to help students learn the material. They also have a nice interactive quiz platform called MOOCulus that lets you go through practice problems online to your heart's content. This is a great course for anyone seeking to learn calculus for the first time or relearn later in life. The only downside to this course is that it is longer than most MOOCs--16 weeks--so it can be hard to keep up with the weekly schedule. If you take a lot of MOOCs, you may find that you get too busy with other newer ones to stick to the schedule.

This is an excellent Calculus course - I have never had a maths class where the Professors made the content so interesting and with such enthusiasm. They also produced a free ebook as part of the package (Mooculus) which was quite helpful to practice on additional examples.

I took this class just as a refresher. The professor is so funny, and I guarantee you won't be sleepy when watching the video lectures! Got 100%, because of there's so many attempts in the quizzes and exams =D

An excellent math course at the first year level. Presentations by Bart Snapp and Jim Fowler made every concept covered easy and fun to understand. A reasonably good text, online exercises, and lots of encouragement helped us through. I had taken math before, latest maybe forty years ago. With me in this class were twelve year old grade 8's, grade 9's and 10's, all doing amazingly well, along with people up to their eighties. Along with Jim and Bart's slogan "Let's do some more math!" was the underlying theme, "we can all do it". I learned this material better than ever before, learned more, and in greater depth. A truly excellent course.

Like many others, I love this class. The teaching and resources provided are amazing. I feel that I am really learning Calculus. I have always felt I had a fairly high aptitude for math, and I find this class very challenging. The professors don't shy away from difficult material, but they do provide lots of opportunities to learn.

Eons ago I got a B.A: in Math from an elite university. I barely used it since until now, so I wanted a refresher. Not expecting much from a mid-level university, I was pleasantly shocked by the extremely entertaining teaching of Professor Fowler and his group. If you were ever reluctant to take a calculus course, please take professor Fowler's class. Or if you want to learn how to teach or improve your teaching even if you have no interest in calculus, take his class. You will find the experience rewarding.

The moment you take the course, you can tell that the instructors have put a lot of effort into this course. Unlike other Calculus courses, the instructors will try to open up another world of mathematics for you. They will inspire you into thinking about the real essence of math, instead of just playing around with numbers. The lectures in this course are really awesome, and really capture what math is. However, this IS a Calculus course, and therefore there are quizzes, which you are able to do many times for practice, or just to really get all the concepts down. It may seem like a lot of work at first, but you will really come out thinking about math in a different way, even if you were like me, I thought I knew a lot about Calculus, but after taking this course, I see it in a different light. Overall, awesome course, 10/10.

Bart and Jim are awesome dudes! You can feel the intention to teach in every video lecture. I hate math. I hate calculus. I am taking this because it is a prerequisite of a lot of stuff that I am interested in and my degree. Their slow-paced, positive, and energetic approach is just right for me. Sometimes the amount of minutes and activities and readings are a bit much for me, but I guess mastering any math warrants it.

A calculus course that'll make you smile and laugh out loud. Jim Fowler delivers the lectures with energy and humour. The assignments aren't too taxing and there's a whole supplementary site for practice.

This is a great course. At high school I was taught a lot of this (limits, derivatives, integration) but only how to apply it, not really how and why it works. Jim Fowler does an extremely great job at doing just that, which results in a very deep understanding of the concepts. The lectures are very short (most of them are under 10 minutes) so they do not get boring, and he keeps them very interesting and clear. I would recommend this course to everyone.

I wish I could give this class six stars! Prof. Fowler is the most enthusiastic lecturer I've ever seen - online or in real life - and his enthusiasm is infectious. The lectures are never dry, dull, or boring. The quality of the video is excellent - obviously a lot of work went into getting each lecture just right. In a subject like calculus, it's easy to get bogged down in the algebra and trigonometry. You might set up a problem correctly, then differentiate or anti-differentiate, and end up with a complicated function that requires a lot of algebra to simplify, and it's tempting for a lecturer to gloss over the algebra or trigonometry. If your algebra and trigonometry are a bit rusty, this can make the solution difficult to follow. Prof. Fowler never does this. He always works out the algebra and trigonometry step-by-step, so I never was lost trying to follow a problem solution or a proof. Staff participation in the discussion forums is higher than any other MOOC I've taken. Ask a question in the forums, and you're very likely to get a helpful response from Prof. Fowler or one of the other members of the team. I'm greatly looking forward to future math classes from the Ohio State team.

I have loved every minute of this class and will really miss it when it ends. The team has managed to amaze me repeatedly with mathematical connections I never understood before, despite taking about 40 hours of math in college. The lectures are engaging and often funny, and the mooculus exercises frequently lead you to insight by just playing around with the numbers or graphs. Although it was somewhat awkward to type in the equations in that system, it is still under development. I really wish I had had a professor in college like Dr. Fowler - his passion for teaching is infectious. Whatever the team's next course offering turns out to be, I will happily jump at it. Ssh, I would even sign up if it weren't free.

One of the best courses i have ever taken. Professor is amazing. The whole team have put a lot of effort in this course. There were always someone in the forums, they fulfilled any reasonable request, they helped whoever needed help. Even though i already had some background in this field, this course helped me remember easily and teached me a lot of new stuff. There is also an online site with excercises(MOOCULUS) from the course team that really helps you with the course. If you want to learn calculus,i think this is the course.

This course is terrific! Professor Fowler is brimming with enthusiasm about his subject and it's infectious. Every week I looked forward to new videos, practice problems, a new chapter of the textbook and a quiz. The videos are short (5-10 minutes), excellently paced (careful explanations without getting bogged down), and clear (explaining concepts in a conversational and easy way). The practice problems are crucial to getting hands-on experience with the concepts, plus they provide step by step hints and explanations if you want them. The course covers derivatives, applications of the derivative, Reimann sums, L'hopital's rule, the fundamental theorem of Calculus, integration, and a few applications of integration. I had studied pre-calculus years ago and was slightly nervous about taking a calculus course, but all of the anxiety about math went away during this course and I became truly fascinated with the subject. A totally positive experience!

Last time I took a Calculus class was 10 years ago. This class was simply the best Calc course I have ever taken (and I have sampled a few online offerings). Dr. Fowler explains things in a clear and elegant way, not to mention the proper flow of topics from week to week. He makes the subject very intuitive. It is a much easier class than Calculus single variable (which I dropped out of).. Calculus One is what I needed Here is a post I did that compared the two: http://moocj.blogspot.com/2013/01/calculus-mooc-nam- style.html I hope to see more classes from Dr. Fowler (there is talk of a Complex Analysis Course), Dr. Fowler makes the subject of Calculus very "lite" (in a good way, he covered a lot of ground). So, I am hoping, in that regard, he teaches other courses

Jim Fowler is the best maths teacher I have ever had. :) Thanks to him, I could grasp concepts intuitively (despite my weak mathematical background).

I'm heading into week 15, and it's a credit to these guys and their humor, enthusiasm, and engagement that I'm going to finish this course. I've always had problems with math, but every step has been explained (often in entertaining ways) in ways that are clear and easy to remember (I'll never forget the chain rule or how to solve related rate problems). I expected to struggle - and I did, but hey, I add on my fingers - but I never expected to feel sad that the course is almost over. They know what they're doing when it comes to teaching math.

The amount of energy Jim has and the passion that he shares with us makes this course really easy to digest. The amount of work that must have gone into creating the whole https://mooculus.osu.edu site (which supports this course) is immense. This is by far one of the most complete courses I have taken (out of about 8 or so). I say complete because the book is available and free, the lectures are engaging and highly educational. The curriculum is well thought out. The depth is just right (explains reasoning not just techniques). The exercise platform is incredibly good (based on the khanacademy framework). All in all 10/10. Good work Jim+Team

Even though I'm taking this course with a lot of previous exposure to Calculus, I am more than enjoying it. Jim Fowler presents Calculus in a new way - he is energetic and inspiring, while still getting in a lot of what makes Calculus so incredibly powerful. This is an amazing course and I am certain that anybody who is introduced to Calculus via this course will gain a very deep understanding compared to what one gets in a lot of offline courses.

Started this course back in...I actually forgot when this course started, because it is so much fun! Jim Fowler is one of the best lecturers I have ever come across. He is dedicated to the course and he is highly engaged with his students. His lecturing style makes what seems like the scary Godzilla of maths to be something like the wonderful friendly unicorn of maths. I can't stress enough how much I love this course!
