Course Description

CS101 teaches the essential ideas of Computer Science for a zero-prior-experience audience. The course uses small coding experiments in the browser to play with the nature of computers, understanding their strengths and limitations. Sign up for the "To be announced" session to be notified by email when the class is next run, and sign up for "Self-Study" to start browsing the class materials right away. Self-Study mode makes all the videos and assignments available to be done at your own pace, but without a certificate of completion at the end.

This was the first online course that I took and it really set the standard for the rest. Nick Parlante is a brilliant instructor whose enthusiasm was contagious. He ended up inspiring me enough to further study on a couple of the topics he touched upon. Also, the experience really made me check out more MOOCs. Recommend it to anyone who doesn't want too much workload and is ready to be inspired.

Really basic stuff but great for beginners and people with no previous knowledge about the subject.

This course is a terrific introduction to the area of Computer Science, covering a wide range of topics, such as coding, security and hardware. If you or somebody that you know are considering a high-demand career in Computer Science but have minimal experience and knowledge, then I highly recommend this course. (Please note that I completed the intake-based version of this MOOC via the Stanford Online rather than the self-paced version being hosted at Coursera.)

I took this course from the Stanford Online platform. I just took this course for fun even though I am fairly well versed with computers. What you really learn is seriously the basics of computers which most don't know and so in a way it was great to see what lies beneath the ground. Nick is a great instructor and I seriously appreciate his effort in getting this course together. The time commitment required is minimum and anyone looking to have fun should take this course.

Great overview of computers and programming. It is relatively quick and easy to digest, but does provide a solid foundation for further study in the subject.

Nick has a great style. This course is designed for people who know next to nothing about computers (there is even a video showing how a hard-drive is build and how it spins). If you are undecided if programming is for you, this is the course to take. You will not learn any real programming in this course, but you will learn the basic rules that govern all kinds of computer programming. This course uses an adapted version of Javascript, but does not teach real-life version of Javascript.

I have been taking several coruses last year, but this one was the best. Nick is a great teacher and it keeps me motivated the way he talks. I like Nicks way of learning. I will surely take another courses by Nick! Its just that I did not expect that much programming, but its simple programming.

This course was the most fun I have ever had learning about computers. Toggling between the lectures and tasks was a nice set up. Nick and his staff where friendly and made learning easy. I would recommend this course to anyone wanting to learn the basics of computer science.
