Course Description

This is a course aimed at making you a better designer. The course marries theory and practice, as both are valuable in improving design performance. Lectures and readings will lay out the fundamental concepts that underpin design as a human activity. Weekly design challenges test your ability to apply those ideas to solve real problems. The course is deliberately broad - spanning all domains of design, including architecture, graphics, services, apparel, engineered goods, and products. The emphasis of the course is the basic design process: define, explore, select, and refine. You, the student, bring to the course your particular interests and expertise related to, for instance, engineering, furniture, fashion, architecture, or products. In prior sessions of the course about half of the participants were novices and about half had prior professional design expertise. Both groups seem to benefit substantially from the course. I really enjoy this course and it made me rethink of what other problem in my surrounding that I could help solve. I love how the freedom that Prof Karl gave us in terms of the design that we want to create and the problem we want to solve! I will highly recommend this course to my friends!

This was the first online course I have taken and I actually had low expectations. I thought with my background as a Mechanical Engineer, it would be a nice refresher in what I already knew. What it turned out to be was a wonderful journey in looking at the design process from start to finish in an engaging format. This is a hands on course that get's you evolved in a good way. It is a little time consuming but well worth it in the end. I highly recommend this course if you are interested in understanding the process of creating something.

DESIGN Creation of Artifacts in Society. Attending the course is a gift, I get so much inspiration and new knowledge. When a friend told me about this course I sign up at once. I had some concerns if my english skills was well enough to follow the level of the course and also if I had time enough to do the assignments. It turned out that I was not a problem at all, everything is clear and well explained. Every day I look forward to see a new video and get a new challenge. It makes me happy and gives my day a creative start. Even if the class is not finished yet, I already learned a lot. Thanks to Karl T. Ulrich and the team behind this class. If you enjoy making things at all, I'd recommend this course. You'll learn a more structured approach to design, as well as sparking lots of new ideas along the way! The peer review process is interesting.

This is the first course of this sort I'm taking and I'm simply loving it. The lectures are pretty interesting and the weekly assignments so far have all helped me learn something new. The course project has everyone excited about it as we are addressing real life issues and solving them in our own way. Highly recommend this!

The course was very practical... and that is what design is about: just start from an idea and then think carefully about it and do something and then judge your design and then improve it and then ... it is done! What a great learning process and so rewarding and fun. The peer review process is also a very valuable method to learn and to push yourself to your best. Really enjoyed the course, and now that is completed, I miss it a bit....
