Course Description

Most entrepreneurship courses focus on how to start a business. Few focus on the next big entrepreneurial inflection point: how do you successfully grow an existing private business? This is the focus of this Course. It is based on the instructor's research and thirty years of real-world experience advising private growth companies. This Course will challenge how you think about growth; give you tools to help you plan for growth, assess the preconditions to grow, and manage the risks of growth. You will study stories of how five different private businesses faced their growth challenges. Growth, if not properly managed, can overwhelm a business, destroying value and in many cases even causing the business to fail. However, the research shows that every growth business faces common challenges. You can learn from others' experience—you do not have to "reinvent the wheel". The Course format is case based. However, the research shows that every growth business faces common challenges. You can learn from others' experience—you do not have to "reinvent the wheel". The Course format is case based. Each case tells a compelling story. You will learn from Julie Allinson, Susan Fellers, Dave Lindsey, Parik Laxinarayan and Eric Barger. In addition, each week, we will discuss a different content theme. In Weeks and 2 and 5, you will engage in Workshops where you will be asked to use and apply the Course tools and concepts to create growth strategies for two different real-life businesses. You will have the opportunity to create a Course Community of fellow-students to learn from each other as the Course progresses. You will learn about the: "3 Myths of Growth"; the "Truth About Growth"; why growth is like "Mother Nature"; the "Gas Pedal" approach to growth; the all important "4 Ps" of how to grow; and how to scale a business strategically.

Although basic- it is a very well thought out, systematic, and well-presented process to apply to an existing small business to decide IF one should expand it, and HOW to do this properly. As a an entrepreneur who has worked at 2 startups and co-founded another the insights are practical and useful and I still learned a few things. Very kind, engaging, and animated lecturer. As a typical "Southern Gentlemen" he speaks slowly so watch at 2x speed

If you are completely new to having a business, I suppose this MOOC could be useful. But if you have significant business/entrepreneurial experience, this MOOCs value is questionable. The professor spends too much time on obvious things and his words/minute rate is low. Even speeding this up to double speed means the value/minute of his lectures is quite low relative to other MOOCs.

I would recommend this course for anyone planning to start a small business or anyone looking to grow a business. I think any business decisionmaker could benefit from studying the concepts covered in this course. The instructor knows the material well and does a great job of conveying his knowledge in an engaging way. There is one final exam for the course and your grade on this exam is your grade for the course. You don't get the grade immediately after completing the exam. Instead, it takes a short while to get an email telling you your test results.

Only Coursera class taken that has been engaging...which is a feat with an on- line platform. Assignments were relevant to materials presented, Prof Ed had office hours weekly AND he answered questions regularly. Meaningful, thoughtful, wonderful class! I applaud his dedication and cannot wait until part II to begin in April!
