Course Description

Robots today move far too conservatively, using control systems that attempt to maintain full control authority at all times. Humans and animals move much more aggressively by routinely executing motions which involve a loss of instantaneous control authority. Controlling nonlinear systems without complete control authority requires methods that can reason about and exploit the natural dynamics of our machines.

This course introduces nonlinear dynamics and control of underactuated mechanical systems, with an emphasis on computational methods. Topics include the nonlinear dynamics of robotic manipulators, applied optimal and robust control and motion planning. Discussions include examples from biology and applications to legged locomotion, compliant manipulation, underwater robots, and flying machines.

  • Who can register for this course?
    • Unfortunately, learners from Iran, Sudan, Cuba and the Crimea region of Ukraine will not be able to register for this course at the present time.
    • While edX has received a license from the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) to offer courses to learners from Iran and Sudan our license does not cover this course.
    • Separately, EdX has applied for a license to offer courses to learners in the Crimea region of Ukraine, but we are awaiting a determination from OFAC on that application.
    • We are deeply sorry the U.S. government has determined that we have to block these learners, and we are working diligently to rectify this situation as soon as possible.

Online video tutorials and nothing much. Not inspiring like 'From NAND to Tetris' or some of the udacity courses which are interactive and DIY/Hands on experience kinda course. There's sense of excitement when one starts working on such courses and feeling of accomplishment when completed. Online platforms (MOOCs) are supposed to do better. Not turn it into online classroom. Technology offers better and effective learning with fun being the biggest factor. I am not going to continue this course. Recording lectures and dumping it online with an MIT/Harvard tag doesn't motivates lot of people to undertake such courses.

I regularly recommend this course as one of the best that I've taken so far on an e-learning platform. It teaches some advanced topics in control that I've been struggling to find anywhere, and it does so with clear explanations that have tons of detail (the videos are taken straight from the actual lectures at MIT) while keeping an informal and easy-going atmosphere. The topics are not easy, but if you're interested in control this course is definitely for you.

Best course ever. Does not dilute the contents. Really keep you working throughout - which is the real fun. if only lecture 7 was available it is really a 5 star content

Don't really appreciate all of the tricky worded questions with only one attempt to answer. I'm enjoying the material other than that, and I'm finding this is a good way to learn more about the field. If I didn't care about my grade in the course I would be happier with my overall experience.

great course. why is US blocking all these countries from access to a university course? it's not like the course covers how to build nuclear weapons.

I have joined dozens of online courses and I think this course is one of the difficult-but-interesting online course especially if you want to delve about dynamics and control system.

As for the topic, we are at week 3 at the moment and so far it's been really thrilling. As for the quality of the course, there's great attention from the TAs; homeworks are full of insight; the included open source matlab package is great; a Matlab license is included for the duration of the course; I give the organizers big congratulations.
