American politics has all the aspects of drama, but it has real meaning for people’s everyday lives.

What are the foundations of the U.S. political system? How do leading institutions such as the presidency and Congress operate? Where do public opinion, political parties, groups, and the media fit in? What explains America’s economic, social, and foreign policies?

If exploring these questions interests you, then this is the course for you. This course is an introduction to the U.S. government that draws on political science and cases—such as the Iraq invasion and health care reform—to explain how the U.S. government system works.

No previous study of American politics needed. Join us on a journey into the heart of the U.S. governing system. This course is ideal for:

This course was interesting. I learned a lot about the beginning of US, and about the constitution and how the power structure was built. Thomas E. Patterson tells in an easy way how it all works, with new and old examples. The video and the literature are very good. I would recommend having Patterson latest book, that is also updated. This was my first course where I used edx but will not be my last.

The course content was enough for me, being green in American Government issues, to understand why it made certain in the past and explains what's currently going on to some extent. I couldn't ask for a better course instructor! He was very articulate. Thank you Harvard for this course, it blends well with my Masters studies. Thank you edx for providing such a well established platform for learning. Cheers to more learning experiences!

Excellent course! The topics are well structured, the instructor explains in a clear and comprehensive way. A nice feature was that some the videos were filmed in the relevant locations like Washington DC etc....

I did this course and it's fantastic. The course covers the main arms of the American Government and how they. If you like to understand how governments work and how efficient the respective government institutions can be managed, then this course is for you. If you have plans for politics, then this is also for you.

This course is literally awesome. I'm a kid who's always been exposed to politics since young, yet I don't quite seem to know how the government works. This course has taught me not only the basic structures of America, it also provided useful case studies, history and current political issues today, presented in an extremely fun and interesting way. I loved it.

The course deals with issues that have to do with the application of methods and techniques that the US government has taken over the decades, and of course advantages and disadvantages during the last decade have brought pluralism that now have United States with a strategy of particular rights and freedoms. The Constitution protects the important issues in American society, and this is why US citizens should be proud. God Bless America.

I am terrible curios to start and to learn from this course. Watching the introduction and seeing the syllabus gave me the confidence that this course would enrich my knowledge, would made possible to connect to different experiences and people and finally would help me in gaining more understanding about the democratic political system, in general, and in particular about USA. I would recommend this course to my friends. Hope to have fun and enjoy it!

I am not impressed by their focus on "peer assessed" grading. It results in random and sometimes insulting marks which gives no motivation to write the four 600 word essays they require. Some courses you can simply not do them & still pass but this course is structured differently. However, the content of the course and the profs presentation is excellent. He does a very effective job of explaining the different components of the American government system and how they are put together. I am impressed by the videos and have learned a lot from them, but i still won't waste time writing essays for the Certificate just to be trashed by random student markers.
