Course Description

Explore the continent of Antarctica and more than 500 million years of geological history and 250 years of geographical discovery and scientific endeavour.

In this course, you will learn through lectures filmed on location on Ross Island and in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica.

Cliff, an Antarctic veteran, with 12 seasons on the ice, will introduce you to some of our planet’s most remarkable landscapes—the Dry Valleys, the Transantarctic Mountains and the world’s southernmost volcanic island. At a remote field camp, he interviews fellow geologists studying fossil-rich sediments—from a time when Antarctica was 20°C warmer than today—to see what Antarctica’s past climate can reveal about what the future might hold.

Rebecca, a science historian and writer who has written extensively about Antarctica, visits Captain Robert Scott’s huts on Ross Island and interviews conservators from the Antarctic Heritage Trust and scientis...

You’ll learn about the explorers and scientists from around the world who have been drawn to work and sometimes risk their lives here—from James Cook’s first venture below the Antarctic Circle, to the British scientists who discovered the ozone hole, to the first women to work on the ice.

The standout feature is the informative and sometimes cheesy videos filmed on location in Antarctica with a healthy dose of Antarctic history and geology with a smattering of current affairs, this course is an amazing experience.

This was an excellent course. As an Old (73 years) Antarctic Explorer it was joy to re-connect with some of my own experiences in the Dry Valleys. I am inspired to prepare a picture book for my grandchildren that highlights the importance of Antarctica. Thanks for a great course.

I really enjoyed the course. The focus was very much on science but the presentation made it interesting and easy to understand. The little fun videos added a lighter element.

Very engaging course. Lots of interaction from the instructors. Essential for anyone wanting to learn more about about the relationship between global climate change and Antarctica (a bigger topic than you might realise).

This is one of the most absorbing courses I've taken, and I'm a bit of a MOOC addict. It's beautifully presented, very informative and entertaining. The instructors are great, with none of the irritating habits that can make a good course unwatchable, and the material is cutting-edge science, told in a way that is accessible to non-scientists, yet interesting to those with some knowledge of the science too.

It's a good and fun course, I also wish it had been longer. It gives a nice introduction to Antarctica's exploration history, geology, and scientific experiments. There isn't much of a depth though, so I'd like to see an advanced sequel. However, this is not a disadvantage, the course is really an excellent introduction, giving you the human aspect of Antarctica, and emphasizes the burning issues. Good job, VictoriaX!

Interesting, enthralling and inspiring - this course covers Antarctica from history to science to art. Easy to follow for the non-scientist who wants to find out about this amazing place - and especially for the work that is being done on the effects of climate change.

A lot of well presented information, tons of materials from videos, pictures, and links to external fonts and new publications. Understand Antarctica under this new point of view help to understand the Global warming and the desertification by human influence as terrible factor in contrast to earth natural desertification to create balance and support for several way of lives including humanity

Really, really good and very worthwhile. I already knew a reasonable amount about Antarctica, following a visit to the Peninsular, but there was so much more to learn. I agree with other reviewers, the videos were terrific. Everyone explained complex matters very clearly and the presenters were friendly, cheerful and not too serious. Thank you.

I truly enjoyed this course! The video material and lessons were very detailed, ranging over a lot of subjects. I learned a lot about the different aspects of Antarctica. The instructors were very nice, interesting and really tried to interact with the students. I especially loved the little silliness they added at the end of their week updates to make it more enjoyable, while still really teaching information and discussing/explaining more about the subjects or questions that students discussed/asked.

The course content matched the outline well. Expectations were met and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Both instructors explained their subject areas well and made good and appropriate use of additional expertise to reinforce the points being made. Victoria, Wellington resourced the course well. Some of the audio could have been enhanced to make it more audible but overall the quality of the video materials was very good

Absolutely loved this course and would have loved it to be longer, especially the geology section which was my favourite part. Easy to watch lectures, engaging presenters, and many links for further reading as desired. Also included access to a geology textbook which is a good resource. Definitely whetted the appetite for further studying on the subject. Well done to all involved.

A very basic introduction to Antarctica. Very little geology. But gives access to an interesting book that may wet your appetite. Not for those looking for more scientific information.

Great course that covered a wide range of topics. The geology of Antarctica was particularly fascinating. I enjoyed learning that Antarctica is divided into two geologically different parts, east and west, and that there are volcanoes. Also was glad to see that arts were part of the picture in the course.

It is a great and informative course. Wish it was longer, it gives a will to learn and see more and more about each subject. But with that said, it does give lots of information in each category, easy to understand and fun to watch. As a person with bad hearing impairment I didn´t have any problem following that course, all these things are very well thought of too.
