Course Description

Interested in exploring the deadliest and most mysterious parts of our universe? Or, investigating black holes, which warp the very fabric of space-time around them?

We will look at what we know about these objects, and also at the many unsolved mysteries that surround them. We will also study white-dwarf stars and neutron stars, where the mind-bending laws of quantum mechanics collide with relativity. And, examine dwarf novae, classical novae, supernovae and even hypernovae: the most violent explosions in the cosmos.

This course is designed for people who would like to get a deeper understanding of astronomy than that offered by popular science articles and television shows. You will need reasonable high-school level Maths and Physics to get the most out of this course.

This is the third of four ANUx courses which together make up the Australian National University's first year astrophysics program. It follows on from ...

This is the third of four ANUx courses which together make up the Australian National University's first year astrophysics program. It follows on from a course on the Greatest Unsolved Mysteries of the Universe, and a course on exoplanets. It is not necessary to have done the previous courses first: all necessary background material is repeated here. It is followed by a course on cosmology. These courses compromise the Astrophysics XSeries. Learn more about the XSeries program and register for all the courses in the series today!

It's fun and awesome. Both the professors are very good on themselves, but their combined effort is something of unutterable greatness. The topics are inspiringly presented, in depth, using the support of lots of ad hoc simulations. The mystery part by Paul is a masterpiece of interactive sci-fi where YOU are the scientist. The complete ANU Astrophysics series is a must for any student with any kind of scientific interest. Do this course, really.

This is a superbly crafted course, filled with interesting details on the techniques and inherent limitations of astrophysics. Both instructors are highly qualified, to say the least, but have a knack for clear communication and plain speaking. This makes the course accessible to anyone who is comfortable with high school math. It's also an excellent course for people who know something about physics. I have an MS in Applied Physics, but knew little about astrophysics before completing this X-Series from ANU. Science and engineering are highly specialized; it's great to find courses that touch upon many contemporary topics of interest to observatories and researchers all over the world. Nowadays, books on astronomy/astrophysics/cosmology are out of date when we open them! All of the courses in series are packed with cutting-edge material on new frontiers currently being explored by astrophysicists. It's pretty clear Brian an... All of the courses in series are packed with cutting-edge material on new frontiers currently being explored by astrophysicists. It's pretty clear Brian and Paul enjoy their work, and the presentation emphasizes practical knowledge, "matchbook" calculations that can be done on a note pad, and the essential concepts used to advance the work of astrophysics. Anyone taking these courses will learn a lot about astronomy and astrophysics, and also the thought process used by physicists to tackle problems of all kinds.

Just can't say too much good about this course! I completed the whole series (4 courses). I fully expected to crash and burn in the first two weeks, but the instructors were so helpful that I not only made it through, I did well. Additionally, Paul and Brian are a fantastic team! Brian has the funniest deadpan, and is so "blank" in asking questions that someone wrote in that he must not have much background in the topic. Only a Nobel Prize! You do need good high school math to get the most out of the class, but you can even enjoy it without doing the math exercises. I cannot recommend it enough!

I think that this is the greatest Astrophysics course on the internet. The course is very well paced and easy-to-follow. It covers greatly interesting topics and encourages further interest into this field.

I was grown as a kid in the 70´s with Carl Sagan´s series Cosmos and since then, I have being hooked into astronomy, but as I know, Astrophysics is a subject that is for ¨NASA¨ guys, but this course is so well explained in a simple manner that I think a 15 yr kid with a normal IQ and interest could take it and learn a lot from such great instructors and presentations. By the way I have a bachelor degree in Electrical mechanical engineering, and I have been working in the oil industry for almost 20 yr, so I am pushing my brain to think again in a new way.

This course is extremely interesting and well presented. The content is easy to understand even for a non-native English speaker. The worked examples after each section are helpful and the course material is very solid. A big thank you to the instructors and edX to have made this available online!

This is the best series of astronomical courses on the Internet. The teaching style, the mysteries (Yes, the mysteries in which you're investigating a made-up universe and play around with it! Or your job is to try to save the world!), the homework sets - everything was perfect. The easiest thing is to take these courses in order, so that Cosmology doesn't surprise you. After these courses, I gained so much interest, so I switched a bit from my theoretical mathematics background to astrophysics, and I'm loving it in here. So, it can really change your life. This is the best thing.

While this course is being only offered for the first time, the first and second courses in the A.N.U. have been offered before and they were both excellent. We should be looking forward to this third course. Charles F. Fromme, Jr.

This series contains the pedagogically best made courses that either edx or coursera has to offer thanks to Paul Francis . No mathematical skills beyond middle school or which couldn't be looked up are needed to take these courses , yet mathematics are cleverly used throughout every course to provide true understanding of the topics .
