Course Description

What do self-driving cars, face recognition, web search, industrial robots, missile guidance, and tumor detection have in common?

They are all complex real world problems being solved with applications of intelligence (AI).

This course will provide a broad understanding of the basic techniques for building intelligent computer systems and an understanding of how AI is applied to problems.

You will learn about the history of AI, intelligent agents, state-space problem representations, uninformed and heuristic search, game playing, logical agents, and constraint satisfaction problems.

Hands on experience will be gained by building a basic search agent. Adversarial search will be explored through the creation of a game and an introduction to machine learning includes work on linear regression.

This is a great course. I would highly recommend this course to anyone wanting an introduction to AI. The course itself was quite challenging and definitely worth the verified certificate. Although the quizzes were just a bit tough, the programming assignments were extremely hard (in a good way). The projects were fun and interesting. Do however note that they might suck up a lot of your time (20-25 hrs on average) Also, this course has quite a bit of math in it. I took this course when I didn't know much of linear algebra and calculus and in some parts of the course, my mind was totally blank. Now , after finishing the course and after learning some of that math, I just went through those videos which had previously left me totally blank and I was able to easily comprehend the material. I also managed to pass quite easily even without the math ( I even left out a programming assignment and still got a 82%) so if you don't have the ... This is a great course. Coming to the involvement of the staff and TAs, it wasn't great. At the start of this course (around week 1-4), the staff was extremely responsive and helped out tons of students. However, as the course progressed, involvement went down. Technical problems would go uncorrected for days and questions would be left unanswered for weeks(Note that quiz errors were still getting corrected throughout the course if those errors were reported quickly). Even with those problems, the course and its contents, engaged me. Fortunately, the staff realized the problem and became active in the last few weeks, with even the course lecturer, who is truly an amazing professor :), helping us out. All in all, a great course totally worth paying for the certificate. I unfortunately couldn't get the money ( :( 300$ is a lot in my country ) to pay for it but I truly enjoyed learning.

This broad, fast-paced survey of AI paradigms and strategies is the first entry in Columbia's AI MicroMasters series. It covers "the usual suspects" such as neural networks and other machine-learning techniques, natural-language processing and intelligent agents, but also includes a variety of state-space search techniques, constraint-satisfaction problems, a challenging introduction to propositional logic, reinforcement learning and Markov processes. It's a grad-level course, and although no special prerequisites are necessary and the concepts are readily grasped by anyone with a decent math background, the number of topics covered makes for a busy schedule. The programming assignments are interesting and rewarding but also require significant effort -- they require putting concepts that are covered in lectures at a fairly high level into practical, working use. I enjoyed the lectures. Prof. Ansaf Salleb-Aouissi is engaging, clear, and delivers her lectures with a cheerfulness that makes them feel personal. As I note in my review of the second AI MicroMasters course, Machine Learning, this course is very much prerequisite for that one unless you've already had significant prior training in the area. There is considerable topic overlap although almost no subject-matter overlap between the two courses, by which I mean that for most topics covered in great depth in Machine Learning, this course provides an essential intro.

The class covers most fundamentals beneath the AI topic, from supervised learning to unsupervised clustering, from simple reflex agent to logic agent, from simplest neural network Perceptron to re-enforced machine learning. Perfect introduction for the beginner of AI leaner, with all class projects done in Python, the student would gain great experience by applying the AI knowledge directly through these projects. There are also lots outside classroom materiel for students to explore later if they have the bandwidth. I am totally pleased to have class like this even there is little imperfection here and there. Great job ColumbiaX team!

This is a great course. the content is well designed to arouse curiosity and is challenging. Vocareum is a little challenging. Not able to debug in Vocareum is a serious limitation that causes a learner to be less effecient. I liked the instructor but she could be more engaging.

The content was complete and well structured. however the instructor was terrible. Hard to understand and mostly reading slides. I took the MOOC on Freshman Biology and that course was exceptional, but I cnat recomment this one. And you had better know how to program in Python going in!

I was working on AI for quite sometime but what I realized is that my knowledge was quite incomplete before joining this course. I feel that just in three months of time my understanding of AI fundamentals has become quite mature and deep. I enjoyed each and every part of the content throughout the session especially the projects. On the lighter note, my son is quite happy that we have home made sudoku and 2048 solver :). The course contents delivery was absolutely great by Dr Ansaf that made the learning journey quite pleasant and effortless. I recommend this as a foundation course to everyone who wants to make a career in AI. Thank you very much Dr Ansaf and the whole team to make such kind of course a possibility.

The course content was great. I learned a lot and had to work hard to get the assignments done. The instructor was good, but at times seemed to rush through material that needed more careful attention. The platform used to submit assignments had problems sometimes. I myself experienced a serious issue where my assignment would time out and I would be graded with a zero and it was hard to get the staff's attention to fix it. In the end it was fixed and I was graded correctly but it took effort on my part writing several times on the forum (the only way to communicate with the staff) asking for someone to look at it. I imagine these issues are due also to the fact that this was the first time the course was offered and some details are being addressed as we run the course, so I hope this will not be a problem in future offerings. Once those issues are corrected, this is a great course to take. Expect to work hard and spend time working... The course content was great. You need to have coding experience as the assignments are not trivial and you will not have time to learn to code while working on them. I did not have experience in Python but I code for a living and it was not easy. In the end, I am very happy I took this course and I strongly recommend it.

I found this course to be very well put together and Professor Ansaf Salleb-Aouissi has a lecture style I enjoy and can follow easily. The textbook is fantastic. The automatic grading of programming assignments takes a little getting used to but I found I learned a LOT ... the quality of instruction was at least as good as my undergrad AI courses I took in person at a physical university. Please be aware it is a masters level course and challenging! I am very happy to have an opportunity to take some graduate studies in AI it has always been my dream.

The highlight of the course is the content: good lectures and five very interesting and informative programming assignments. I put about 20 hrs/week into the course and learned quite a bit. The weak part of the course is the TA engagement; they weren't very responsive or helpful. Course materials, including quizzes, contain numerous grammatical errors that hopefully will be cleaned up before the next session.

Learned lots. Okay so I was about to take some stars off for how Edx does not update my grades quickly enough (it takes days... really??) but a moment ago everything just refreshed with my correct grades, so there! Assignments can be challenging so if you are a beginner in Python you better practice a bit before you jump in.

This course was exciting, a real eye-opener, introducing and exploring a complete new subject area and really getting some depth. The newcomer will definitely need some programming skills, though Python is fairly easy if you have used other languages. The practical projects are genuinely tough and need both time and persistence; I found myself writing up to 300 lines of code, with a re-write along the way, to achieve a couple of the projects, in description of which the course rubric's "may require at least several hours' work" seems a slight understatement! That said, I am very happy with the scope of the course, which is both broad and deep, and came away with the feeling of having gained a great deal of knowledge as well as the practical tools to apply it.

I just completed the course and it was the most rewarding online course I ever took. I was challenged by the programming assignments and learned a lot, because I never get a chance to practice with python and from this perspective the course was a 2-in-1. Cons: the grading platform is slow. I highly recommend this course to those who have the time to complete it all (it is 12 intensive weeks) including the (addictive) programming projects.

Weak. Poor English. Superficial yet lengthy (not straight to the point). No coherent structure (why spend 2 weeks on Machine Learning while there is another course from the program that focuses on Machine Learning). Very disappointing from that university - I did not persist for more than 2 weeks because I got the same frustrations from their Xseries of last year (Data Science and Analytics in Context). Have completed many online courses at a higher level in terms of maths and machine learning. A shame.

In summary as free course it’s excellent, but as paid course especially in pursuit of the Micromaster, I think it needs to be improved. What I think could be better: - Instructor: the instructor most of the time just reads the slides speaking too fast, what it makes very difficult to understand, in my opinion the only way to learn is watch the videos, research the topic on Internet and watch the video again. - Content: I understand that AI is huge and not everything can be added to a single course, and many complex topic must be just listed, what it doesn’t makes sense to me, is expend 3 of the 12 weeks in Machine Learning because there is other course 100% Machine Learning, I mean one week to explain the basis and refer students to the next course, opening more time for other topics, same for the final week it suppose that is an Intro to Robotics, but the instructor just did an explanation about Robot Path Planning, it was no... I was a bit surprised at first to start with graph theory and path-finding, but it made all sense after, sometimes it's hard to understand the programming equivalent from a mathematical formula, but I learned a lot about python and its data-structure while browsing the web to understand how to implement the project given to us, and it was cool :)

I thought this was a great course and a good introduction to the topic. I especially enjoyed the python programming projects. There are 3 chapters on machine learning so if you've already delved into those topics there may be some overlap for you here. The ML & NLP projects we were assigned mostly focused on becoming familiar with the scikit libraries. I think the instructor and the edx platform got a lot right with this course.

I would not recommend this course to anyone, buy a book or find another course - sorry! I will think twice before attending a course from the same University/department again, it was close to waste of time. In short: The quality of lectures are what you can find on wikipedia or many other places. This is by far the worst course I have attended and not at a level I would expect from an EDX and/or university course. Content: The content seems to be relevant for a AI course. But it is the exact same as the recommended book - it could a copy from the book. The course seems to be a detailed "snapshot" type of survey of the field of AI, starting from state space search and game-playing, knowledge representation and reasoning --symbolic approaches, and later on to more modern approaches like machine learning. So far the lectures seem to be at the right level of difficulty/rigor, not for a complete beginner, but still doable for the intellectually motivated. The programming assignments seem to be the meat of the course (where I realized there's a WORLD of difference between simply "understanding" the lectures vs. actually "knowing" the material in your head). Definitely challenging, but I am learning a lot.

pros: syllabus is (refreshingly) balanced between traditional ai topics and newer ml topics. some of the lecture slides are quite illuminating, and add a slightly different perspective to the textbooks cons: maybe there are simply too many students, but the grading servers are definitely wayyyyy too slow. it all works perfectly in the end, but having to wait more than a week to get something graded...
