Course Description

This course covers cosmology – the study of our entire universe. Where did the universe come from? How will it end? What is the nature of space and time?  For the first time in human history, we can give precise, reliable answers to many cosmological questions, thanks to a spectacular series of recent breakthroughs.  But many of the most fundamental mysteries remain unsolved. In this course we will cover the latest advances and the unsolved mysteries. We will explain the recent observations, and with the help of guest speakers Lawrence Krauss and Brian Cox, we will explore the theories behind modern cosmology.

This course is designed for people who would like to get a deeper understanding of astronomy than that offered by popular science articles and shows. You will need reasonable high-school level Maths and Physics to get the most out of this course.

A very pleasant learning experience although I unenrolled after only two weeks. It should not be underestimated the amount of mathematical understanding required to take this course and I'd seriously consider taking the lead up courses before retaking this one again. Good course, but you need to have put the time in beforehand to know the principle equations

The course is amazing, actually is the best source I could find for learning more about the subject. It is both rigorous and understandable, full of examples and effort to make clear something that can be barely explained. Interviews with excellent actors in the cosmology field make this the most enjoyable source of the absolutely amazing series ANUx.

This course was really great. The content is well thought out. I really liked the questions between the videos, and in the final exam, even questions are teaching you something. I really enjoyed and learned a lot. Thank you! I would like to see theoretical courses too.

Of the four courses in this X-Series, Cosmology is in a class by itself. The theories at work are not simple by any stretch of imagination and students may need to spend a little more time with this material. I don't see how it could be presented with greater patience and clarity, owing to the abstract ideas in play. However, Brian Schmidt is no armchair cosmologist! He won the 2011 Nobel Prize in physics for the discovery of dark energy, and is an excellent communicator! This is a superbly crafted course, filled with interesting details on the techniques and inherent limitations of astrophysics. Both instructors are highly qualified, to say the least, but have a knack for clear communication and plain speaking. This makes the course accessible to anyone who is comfortable with high school math. It's also an excellent course for people who know something about physics. I have an MS in Applied Physics, but knew little about astrophysics before completing this X-Series from ANU. Science and engineering are highly specialized; it's great to find courses that touch upon many contemporary topics of interest to observatories and researchers all over the world. Nowadays, books on astronomy/astrophysics/cosmology are out of date when we open them! All of the courses in series are packed with cutting-edge material on new frontiers currently being explored by astrophysicists. It's pretty clear Brian and Paul enjoy their work, and the presentation emphasizes practical knowledge, "matchbook" calculations that can be done on a note pad, and the essential concepts used to advance the work of astrophysics. Anyone taking these courses will learn a lot about astronomy and astrophysics, and also the thought process used by physicists to tackle problems of all kinds.

Excellent course! It was far better than I expected. Very interesting and challenging, however also quite demanding. I think it is a good balance between 'easy to eat' cosmology-related TV shows and the reality with maths and physics in the background. I also enjoyed the way it was presented, challenging home works and the exam which allowed me to go through everything I learned during the course. Interviews with invited guests added also extra flavour, as I could hear other opinions and speculations. And from my point of view the course doesn't try to make your mind, it actually opens it, by showing how many unknown factors we still have and how many interesting discoveries we should expect in the nearest future. I'm glad I enrolled and I could experience it. Highly recommended course for everyone interested in how our Universe works!

This course works perfectly for me, I think it does to other students as well as me. First, the content of this course is really interesting, including origin of universe, mysterious features of universe, fate of universe, etc. Other than that, the course also expose us to real life cosmology in the "mystery part" section, which is different from merely reading books and PDFs. The instructors are one of the best teachers I've ever had because they will try to make things simple and easy to understand, which helped me to score on the homework questions and exam questions. Finally, I would recommend it to physics, astronomy lovers, you guys will love it!

A great course and a wonderful way to have a big-picture on how our universe works. The videos are great, because Brian and Paul try to explain quite complex things in a very intuitive and simple manner, they are excellent tutors. Special thanks to Paul who has always been available to answer questions. Thanks, I really enjoyed completing the course. Best regards Oliver

It's fun and awesome. Both the professors are very good on themselves, but their combined effort is something of unutterable greatness. The topics are inspiringly presented, in depth, using the support of lots of ad hoc simulations. The mystery part by Paul is a masterpiece of interactive sci-fi where YOU are the scientist. The complete ANU Astrophysics series is a must for any student with any kind of scientific interest. Do this course, really.

To know more modern Cosmology that can help me to search more and give me ability to share with my school students that they ask questions about our entire univers. I hope to learn from famous instructors B. Schmidt and P. Francis.

My educational background is management but I love astronomy. I would love to take the course but seeing the mathematical proficiency requirements just stopped me. But this is a great course anyway.

Top quality course. Amazing instructors and excellent content. Highly recommend taking all four astrophysics courses from ANU, in order they have been envisioned. Course platform edX.org is superior for scientific topics to all other platforms. Note that at least high school math and physics background is required.

This is the best series of astronomical courses on the Internet. The teaching style, the mysteries (Yes, the mysteries in which you're investigating a made-up universe and play around with it! Or your job is to try to save the world!), the homework sets - everything was perfect. The easiest thing is to take these courses in order, so that Cosmology doesn't surprise you. After these courses, I gained so much interest, so I switched a bit from my theoretical mathematics background to astrophysics, and I'm loving it in here. So, it can really change your life. This is the best thing.

I have just completed “Cosmology”, the last of four courses in the Edx/ANU Astrophysics X Series. I really enjoyed all four courses. The way they are presented is engaging; the content is presented on a projection screen and the two lecturers stand in front and discuss the content. There are also some videos are of laboratory visits and guest interviews. The friendly exchanges between the two lecturers appears genuine and adds another layer of interest. One of the most rewarding outcomes from doing these courses occurred when I attended a public lecture about the Giant Magellan Telescope. I could understand everything the speaker was saying - this was really satisfying! I am glad I did these courses as I feel I now have a solid basis for understanding the exciting events that are likely to occur in the future. Thanks Paul and Brian.

Like the other courses in this series , my overall praise to the teaching methodology and quality of teaching applies . Yet i was disappointed at lengthy interviews which were mere speculation and even proposed senseless theories which as discussed on the forum did not even offer a possible solution to the problem at hand.
