Course Description

Ludwig van Beethoven’s 9th Symphony premiered in Vienna in 1824, and continues to be one of the most popular symphonies in the repertoire. The monumental symphony’s size and complexity stretches traditional instrumental forms to the breaking point, and its famous choral finale changed our view of orchestral music forever.

Harvard’s Thomas Forrest Kelly (Morton B. Knafel Professor of Music) guides learners through all four movements of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, highlighting aspects of symphonic form, describing Beethoven’s composition process, the rehearsals and premiere performance, and the work’s continued relevance today.

You will learn the basics of musical form and analysis, the genres and styles used and the circumstances of this symphony’s first performance and subsequent history. Learners in this course need not have any prior musical experience.

What a course! I'm a huge fan of the Fist Nights series. It's everything I have ever wanted from a music course: great range, depth, accessible, fun and well made. Professor Kelly is the best! It's quite impressive how he can make such a broad topic accessible to newbies like me. I only wish he would also do a course on how to move your hands and do facial expressions in order to look cool while listing to great music. I can hardly wait for the next installment of this superb series.

I've enrolled into this course after being thrilled while taking the Handel one. Professor Kelly's passion is outweighed only by his knowledge, and his methodological and pedagogical ability to transfer this knowledge is simply astounding. In this course you can learn (or refresh your memory) about the basic of a symphony, and then you'll dive into the wonderful world of the 9th symphony: its history, cultural context, structure, performers, and magnificent details about the premiere. A must-take course, can't wait for others in the series.

Mr. Kelly was absolutely invigorating. The course material was fascinating, and the subject matter could not have been more thought provoking. I sincerely hope there will be more classes on this subject in the near future from this instructor.

I am so impressed and surprised by what i learned in this course. I am a complete novice when it comes to symphony music and though I have always loved Beethoven's Ninth. i never knew the technical side of it. Prof Kelly's teaching style is so good that by the end I was able to discern aspects of the structure of the music that I never would have expected. He does a fabulous job of teaching the uninitiated. This is a great MOOC to broaden your knowledge into this field.
