Course Description

Brain and behavior are inextricably linked in neuroscience. The function of the brain is to govern behavior, and the aim of this course is to causally link biophysical mechanisms with simple behaviors studied in mice. The brain processes information through the concerted activity of many neurons, which communicate with each other through synapses organised in highly dynamic networks. The first goal of the course is to gain a detailed understanding of the structure and function of the fundamental building blocks of the mammalian brain, its synapses and neurons. The second goal is to understand neuronal networks, with specific emphasis on the interactions of excitatory glutamatergic and inhibitory GABAergic neurons. The third goal is to place neuronal network function in the context of sensory processing ultimately leading to behavioral decisions and motor output.

very nice course. mentor did a good job of explaining the content by providing examples and clear explanations. topic is complex which is understandable, however tutor did a good job.

Another Swiss EPFL course of exceptional quality! The teaching style is formal and rigorous, the course is a little fast-paced and topics complex but it is worth the effort. It starts with the usual cell membrane introduction, and continue with layers of complexity up to optogenetics! It's not declared, neither in the title nor in the course description, but in my opinion it seems that all the introductory sections are wisely oriented to lead students to be able to fully understand optogenetics. One of the best neuroscience introductory course, THE best MOOC about optogenetics.

Amazing course, covers a wide range of information going from biomolecular, electrical and biochemical basis of neuronal function, to broader terms like behavior, sensorimotor response, learning and neurological diseases. Contains a brief but interesting insight into the new technologies currently being used in neuroscience field. The lectures were clear, although they require a considerable effort, specially at the first weeks. Looking forward to taking more courses from the instructor and provider.
