Course Description

Learn about the inspirational work of the leading European painters from approximately 1400 to 1800, and explore the issues expressed through the art of painting. Included in this broad time frame are the works of Leonardo da Vinci, Caravaggio, Velázquez, Rembrandt, Vermeer and Goya.

Painters during this period were concerned with ideas such as the pursuit of beauty, the pleasures and pains associated with love, the demonstration of power and status, or the relationship of men and women to the divinity and to nature. In paintings from this period, we find traces of the emergence of the modern mind set, and perspective on issues such as the respective roles of women and men in the world.

This course focuses on images of paintings by the artists listed in the course syllabus. The discussions that will take place in the “course forum” will allow us to touch upon a broader range of issues.

An extensive journey that was elevating, monumental and memorable. A course through which I amassed a wealth of art knowledge, a reference for all future explorations.

Wonderful course - the videos and commentaries are superb. While taking the course I watched each video twice, reveling in their beauty and engaging content. I finished the course two years ago and now and then I enter the archives to rewatch a video or two. And even though I have read extensively on the subject of art history, as an amateur, I learned many new things, especially in the appreciation of individual artworks. More than once, in art galleries I visit around the world, I catch myself thinking - oh yes, I remember that from the course, and I'm infinitely glad to have those memories to resort to. Please make new courses!

I was delighted by this extraordinary on line lesson! It has alaways been a dream of mine to study the art history, though i never had the chance, so this high quality e learning program made it reality. Special thanks to the excellent professor, mr Vergara for his inspirig lectures! Although the sound quality of the videos was not very good... You should consider a new series of lectures, we would love to attend them!

One of the 3 best courses at EDX. I took it twice just for the fun. I have now a very good impression of Universidad Carlos III de Madrid.

I came across this course too late to take it from start to finish, but I simply enjoyed all the videos and test questions at the end of each video. I absolutely love the course material that I was able to access, and I hope that this course is available again to take in the future, because the content is absolutely fascinating.
