Course Description

Learn about the inspirational work of the leading European painters from approximately 1400 to 1800, and explore the issues expressed through the art of painting. Included in this broad time frame are the works of Leonardo da Vinci, Caravaggio, Velázquez, Rembrandt, Vermeer and Goya.

Painters during this period were concerned with ideas such as the pursuit of beauty, the pleasures and pains associated with love, the demonstration of power and status, or the relationship of men and women to the divinity and to nature. In paintings from this period, we find traces of the emergence of the modern mind set, and perspective on issues such as the respective roles of women and men in the world.

This course focuses on images of paintings by the artists listed in the course syllabus. The discussions that will take place in the “course forum” will allow us to touch upon a broader range of issues.

Being a student of art history my interest in greatest works of western art is obvious. But more than that i am interested in the lives of these master painters, and wish to discover through this course the particular social, political and cultural conditions that compel them to reach the zenith of their productive talents.

Wonderful content, good instructor, but I started the course in June and realised that I had to hurry to finish the course before the deadline in order to get the certificate. It is truly a pity.

The course was interesting, informative, and moved at a good pace. The instructor did a great job putting it together and made it easy to follow. For someone who hasn’t gone to university ( or college) it never felt out of reach in my capabilities.

This was a great refresher course for me. I have a Master's in Art History. But lately, I have not been able to relax and read my art books. This was the right course to renew my love of art.

Great introduction to the art history for people without any prior knowledge. Each session focus on one or two painters, so there not too long and it is easy to see two or tree in a row.

I thoroughly enjoyed this course. Our Professor was excellent in his deliveries. What did struck me on this course was to know about some unknown artists and how much was their contribution to advance the painting schools. I recommend this course as it provides a developmental history of arts and how social changes were reflected by artists in their works. To me this is an invaluable dimension.I hope to see a continuation of the course into the 20th Century painting.

This course is an excellent introduction to European art. It includes discussion not only about art but the historical and cultural times that the art was being produced. The lectures are short but always interesting and informative.

I absolutely loved this course. I have a degree in Art History and found this series expanded even my knowledge of the subject in ways not covered in my degree. It was extensive and explored both minor and major painters. The professor was knowledgeable and profound in his presentation. I would gladly take another course from him.

I thoroughly enjoyed the course. The instructor was excellent, struck all the right notes, opened my eyes to many works new to me, and deepened my understanding of works I had previously known about. This is a life-enriching course.

As a complete beginner, this course was brilliant for introducing me to the area. I now feel really inspired to continue studying the history of art. I thought the course was very well-structured and clear. I found the references and current location of the originals of the featured paintings very useful and also the further reading sections. Thank you very much!

I would like to thank you all for creating this course. I have never taken an art history course before. It was something I always wanted to do but never found time. I am a dentist and for the first time in my life, I was at home during COVID. I enjoyed the course very much and I recommended to many friends.

This course was just amazing! The content was structured wonderfully, the chosen paintings discussed with depth and insight, all the important connections necessary to understand the given period were made with precision. I enjoyed every minute of the course, it's intellectually stimulating and emotionally satisfying. This seems the right way to talk about art: engaging, entertaining, and educational! It was evident that Dr. Vergara is both passionate and knowledgeable when it comes to art, and the carefully curated words and images pass that enthusiasm on to students! This is one of those courses that would benefit anyone, regardless of their primary field of study, because art is a universal human endeavour that we're all sensitive to. This is a beautiful introductory course ideal for beginners or amateurs. The videos and explanations of Prof. Alejandro Vergara are of high quality. The course covers many years of art history and numerous painters. My only complain is that the exams and self evaluations were very easy. More difficult exams demand more study and result in greater learning. It is a highly recomendable course and I hope that a second part follows soon.

The course was extremely well done! It was engaging and informative, neither too easy nor hard. I also enjoyed the short videos that tackled discrete subjects but also occasionally referenced other videos to provide a link between subjects. I would definitely take further courses from this professor. I found many of the self quizzes too simple but particularly enjoyed questions in the exams asking me to identify paintings by authorship. A more comprehensive quiz/exam taken two or three times during the course with many more examples (both from the course work and perhaps other works not seen but very indicative of an artist's style/subject matter) would have been challenging and might have led to contemplation of the differences between various artists and styles. Perhaps this could be added as an extra exercise in this or in other courses by the professor (which I eagerly anticipate).

I found this course interesting and informative. It's well-organized by period, and the instructor's terrific lectures are presented in video modules. They're clear and insightful, covering style, technique, artist backgrounds, subjects, historical contexts and the professional/business side (training, workshops, commissions, court appointments, etc.). He relates the stylistic shifts and ways painters are influenced by and influence others. I would have been delighted with an even longer look at these periods, with more painters, but the ones he chose were certainly representative. Five stars!

The instructor's assessments, his speaking/delivery style, and content were perfect for anyone to understand and enjoy. The treatment of the various stages of art "development" through time made a great deal of sense, and the application of the art to the various historical and geographic settings was appreciated.

The course gave me a greater appreciation of art from this period. Looking forward to seeing some of these on my next trip to the Getty museum and I also look forward to taking other art courses from edx.org when they are offered. Thank you!

I have learnt a lot from this course, got to know about the work of painters I didn't know before, and I am glad for that. I found the videos' contents to be rather interesting and the narration engaging, not tiring at all. I also think the background music fits well. To the people that made this course a reality, I would love to see any future courses regarding art made by you again. Finally, thank you very much for your time and effort in designing and providing this course. I truly enjoyed it!

I have been interested in Art History since I took an elective on the History of Art during my Freshman year of high school. Only two other students (both upper classmen) registered for that course with me. It was such a wonderful experience. This course has encouraged me to try to find my teacher from that course over 40 years ago. Let's hope do!

As an art enthusiast since I can remember, this course has shed some light on various aspects that I have not previously known. The instructor has executed the course very thoroughly and effectively. I'd love to see more of this and hopefully something more contemporary in genre. Kudos to the MOOC's team.
