Course Description

Every day, we see concrete used all around us – to build our houses, offices, schools, bridges, and infrastructure. But few people actually understand what gives concrete its strength, resistance, and utility.

The aim of this course is to offer basic cement chemistry to practitioners, as well as new students in the fields of chemistry and engineering.

You will learn how cement is made and hydrated, as well as the environmental and economical benefits it offers. You’ll learn to test your samples in isocalorimetry in order to track the hydration and to prepare and observe samples by scanning electron microscopy. In the last two weeks of the course, you will also learn how X-ray diffraction works and how to apply it to cements.

Because the course is designed for beginning students, it’s not necessary to have a cement background, however basic concepts in chemistry and crystallography will help. This course lasts 6 weeks, during...

I attended only the first 3 weeks and then I dropped it, mainly because feedback was disappointing. We asked many times the course team to check their answers of the tests because they didn't seem right, but no one responded. So, it was impossible to learn what's right and to understand why something was wrong, so I couldn't go further. Other things that I really disliked were the following: The quality of the subtitles was also disappointing. It was the only online course that I had this problem!!! Moreover, almost everything that the course team recommend that we read (for further reading), was written by their professor. Moreover, many of the knowledge that was required in order for someone to pass the tests, was only available in the scripts written by the course leader. Additionally, the passing grade was 80% (!!!!), so you have no other choise, than reading their work........I didn't liked that, because it seems like the cour... I haven't seen such a thing again in any other course that I have taken part!!! They all recommend books and articles from various authors!!!! I have attended many online courses on edx and all of them were perfect. This particular course is the only one of such a low quality. I am very disappointed!!
