Course Description

In today’s world, managerial decisions are increasingly based on data-driven models and analysis using statistical and optimization methods that have dramatically changed the way businesses operate in most domains including service operations, marketing, transportation, and finance.

The main objectives of this course are the following:

  • Introduce fundamental techniques towards a principled approach for data-driven decision-making.
  • Quantitative modeling of dynamic nature of decision problems using historical data, and
  • Learn various approaches for decision-making in the face of uncertainty

Topics covered include probability, statistics, regression, stochastic modeling, and linear, nonlinear and discrete optimization.

Most of the topics will be presented in the context of practical business applications to illustrate its usefulness in practice.

This course is for sure the worst one among those using math/statistics knowledge, I have ever taken on edX. The first 4 weeks are on probability, are led by professsor Maglaras and are ok. In week 5 other person starts to "teach" linear programming problems. The topic itself is very interesting, unfortunately from Week 5 the problems are discussed high-level only and without providing sufficient details on given approach. Students are forced to learn the topic on their own by using materials available in internet, based on the phrases heard during the course. This makes the learning very hard. During the course the students have to do 5 assignments (other 2 are optional). At least medium level experience in Python is required to deal with those tasks. The assignments are very interesting but are made in tool which is completely unfit to the needs, i.e.the Workbench used during the course does not allow the student to understand wh... During the course the students have to do 5 assignments (other 2 are optional). At least medium level experience in Python is required to deal with those tasks. The assignments are very interesting but are made in tool which is completely unfit to the needs, i.e.the Workbench used during the course does not allow the student to understand where he made the error. Based on comments in discussion forum, this is quite common issue among students and very frustrating. Gurobi licence is needed to perform the tasks locally, which allows to work on assignments on your local computer and identify the errors in your code before submitting in Workbench (luckilly the free evaluation licence can be obtained from Gurobi's page). Still, this is just a workaround. The response from staff on issues is slow. My assessment of instructors in this course is 4 for professsor Maglaras and 0 for Mr. Goyal, for no skill to pass the knowledge the other people. The grade for other staff is 2 only as the response was sometimes very slow (measured in weeks, not days). The course is classified as "Business & management" but with my almost 20 years experience in business I must say this course is not for business people. Person, that wants to learn anything in this course, would need to have already a very strong background on linear programming topic. However, if you have that background, then probably you don't need to take this course. By now I have accomplished 8 out 12 weeks, with 6 out of 7 assignments done and all quizzes done already. However, I'm unlikely to go further, as I will not have the opportunity to verify my understanding of material through assignments/quizzes and I'm clear that listening to videos will not help me in any way.

There was a lot of material presented in this course. I felt the instructors were very thorough and enjoyed the material. I had no trouble keeping until about Week 10. During the final weeks of the course, there was a lot of theoretical material presented. The test material and projects were more on the practical end -- and I found I needed to consult other sources to understand. I was unable to do the last project -- the class lectures were of little value to help me understand. Through Week 10 this was a "5-star class"; but lower ratings comes form the material in the last couple of weeks was presented. I enjoyed both instructors. I passed the class (did much better on the final than I thought I would) and earned my certificate - but must admit I got virtually nothing out of the last 2 weeks of the class.

The accent of one professor is very strong. I cannot understand him. And it’s hard to follow him. Overall not recommend it to anybody.

This is one of the best classes out there, the professor has very deep knowledge and that shows on the lectures. Not sure why there are negative reviews here. This is by far one of the best classes out there, very complicated stuff is explained in step by step manner.

One of the worst class I've taken so far and one of the most expensive. (I have done so far around 20 certifications on Edx/Cousera) Bad points: - Very light material (around 2 hours of video/week) - No exercises (!) - In the end I am taking the tests thanks to formula I found on wikipedia. It is rather ironic to pay 300+€ to take an online columbia class and end up reading wikipedia. - You can download the slides (we had to ask for it actually) but they don't include annotations. And annotations in some case account for more than 50% of the information on the slide. So in some case you end up downloading blank pages with titles. - The code tests are really poor & unclear. The tool used is not working properly neither. Good points: - None Conclusion: You can find many better classes on edx for a much lower amount of €. I don't recommend this class to anyone. ColumbiaX should spent a big amount of time to fix this class. Maybe t... One of the worst class I've taken so far and one of the most expensive.
