I found the orientation course to be a great refresher for statistics for those familiar with the concepts; it does run a bit fast, and does not contain much depth, however, for those new to the discipline. I do think with some supplementary reading (the ~20 page document that the course provides as a primer on statistics was arguably more valuable than the videos) that you can get quite a bit out of this, and I look forward to the subsequent modules.

It's really hard to be willingly paying $99 for a course like this one. It meets what was expected: giving students a general idea of this professional program and help them decide whether take it or not. However, the content is naturally superficial and not worth $99. I'd say $25 would be reasonable.

It was a great intro to data scientists with well organized basic stats reviews! This made big data seem a lot less intimidating. I have more confidence in pursuing in subsequent offerings after going through this course.

Instructors were engaging and offered clear explanations of all the concepts. As a proficient statistics user, I found the course to be a helpful refresher of some basic statistics concepts that I sometimes take for granted (like the formula for the two-sample t-test). I think some of the concepts would be challenging for someone with no prior experience with statistics without extra time for supplemental study. I had never used the data analysis tools with Excel, so it was helpful to work with those, which are a more intuitive than R. Also benefited from working along with the instructors with the Excel data to make sparklines, table functions, histograms, etc. Great learning experience overall.

The course, much like many other Microsoft overseen ones, does little to teach you stuff; it rather uses a"helicopter view", in that it shows you stuff that can be done when the learning sinks in. So, if you expected to understand statistics just be watching Liberty talk, you'll have another thing coming - it won't happen. And it wasn't meant to happen, for this is an "orientation" course.

I like the content and case study (example) that is used in the Statistics refresher section 3. It has a good and broad, short, easy to follow Excel exercises that helps get the statistical information down fast.

The content is wonderful as well as the structure. I'm a economic undergrad. I found it was fairly easy for me. However, I would be frustrated by it if I have not took my business stats and econometrics.

As someone making a career transition I think an overall certificate that shows you completed the course and it lists the units would be better than purchasing a certificate from each class. Having a certificate that says "data science orientation" means nothing.

10 years of old Stats in my head library retraced to the front. Nice work. Let's put this stuff into action and hopefully all the homework I completed all those years ago can be made useful (for the first time).

The course is good quality but I think a better course would be a Data Science Certification from a Harvard-based company that is recognized by many industry partners and may make a better choice. Overall I think it helped me more.

I completed this course yesterday. I completed in almost one sitting taking around 3 hours. It is an excellent course. First part is more of an information. In second part you start learning. Third part has deep statistics with hands on excel. I feel it is an excellent opening for a data science course. Now I am going to second course. I hope it is as good as this one. Thanks to Microsoft and EDX for a great course.

Reading the other reviews I was *very* nervous to take this course since I have zero experience in statistics. I work with Excel at my job so I felt very comfortable with the Excel questions and sections. However, as we go into Module 3 which was the brief intro to stats I found myself taking a lot of notes, Googling some things, and watching 3rd party videos to clarify concepts. I can say with certainty if you are dedicated you do not need to have an advanced understanding of stats to pass this. Worth noting, I was using Excel 2011 on a Mac and had to download (the free) StatPlus plug-in in order to get the functionality mentioned in the videos.

The content chosen is good. The third module seems to be too fast and incomprehensible for the students who have no or some background in statistics. That disappointed me and I had to look for other resources to have an in-depth understanding at beginner's pace. Rest all is good

First, I hope the content would be very clear and profound insights will be provided. However, I am a little bit disappointed with the third module, which is a basic introduction to statistics. I had a background in statistics, but it is not thorough. When I listened to the videos and paid attention into it, in my opinion, the explanation is not exhaustive and less understandable. Maybe, providing more supplemental resources can enhance further learners' comprehension. In my humble opinion, it would be hard to follow for people who do not have any background in statistics before.

This course introduces how the Microsoft Data Science Curriculum work, and it's schedule and format. It has 3 ungraded module and 1 lab and let you have a taste of how the quiz system work in edx. The first module introduces what is data science and meet some data scientist. The second module introduces excel. For this module, I recommend you use the data file in the lab session and follow what the instructors do exactly. You have to learn by doing. The number is not the same but it doesn't matter. Also, you have to use excel 2013 or above, otherwise you cannot use the slicing function in the excel table. The third module is a statistics concept review. I said review because it is just very short and lucid. It is useful for someone who already knows the concept. For complete beginner, you must do some outside research, probably the booklet it provides. The lab file is actually the same as the excel module. Just following the instru... Remember to request the certificate before the deadline. Overall, the difficulty is acceptable for a beginner course. My main complaints on the course: 1. I really think that it should be free because it is just an introduction. 2. The data file of the excel module should be provided.

The orientation is okay, though very "follow what I am doing" without diving much deeper. The examples do not work on excel on OS X, since the Data Analysis pack does not exist on that platform.

Completed and paid for verification and account would not link to Microsoft Dashboard, could not get help from support here, very disappointed with the technical aspect of getting the accounts linked. I would recommend coursera.org if its not going to be certified anyways.

I did this course because it's a requirement for the Data Science track. The instructors do not seem to be particularly polished or prepared. It's as though they just did one take without rehearsal or practice. The content is not well taught. I encourage others to take it and come to their own conclusions.

As others have mentioned, it's a decent introduction to the basic concepts of statistics, but really does not go into much depth. I am most likely going to continue through most of this curriculum, but I would feel much better about doing so if this was actually a full course of intro stats. I will have to do some independent study before moving on to the next course. Instructions did a pretty good job at explaining the topics they bothered to explain in detail.
