Course Description

Ever wondered what it would be like to live in the world of dinosaurs? Yes? Well here’s your chance!

Using the Late Cretaceous fossil site of Erlian, China as an example, we bring you to the Gobi desert, as well as leading international museums and institutions to find out how we reconstruct dinosaur ecosystems.

This biology and life science course will focus on the knowledge we can gain from studying animals and plants. You will learn about a dinosaur’s biology including their appearance, classification and diet. We will take a close look at the mostly meat eating theropod dinosaurs, as well as the main plant eating dinosaurs, the sauropodomorphs and ornithischians. At the end of the course, you will learn how palaeontologists use fossil and modern evidence to reconstruct dinosaurs and their ecosystems.

The course is brought to life with the help of award-winning palaeoartist Julius T. Csotonyi and is led by HKU’s vertebrat...

Hi, instructors. I have finished the course by 82% but still not yet received any email to notify me for collecting the hard copy of the poster. Thanks to check and I really want the poster very much. Recap part of the content from week 6's email as below: "3.Learners who achieve a final course grade of 50% or above will be sent a folded hard copy of our A1-sized dinosaur poster (59.4cm x 84.1cm) via standard mail. Eligible local learners can also collect their posters from HKU directly. We will notify you with a separate email in late March if you are eligible for this poster." Cruz PANG

Excellent course. It's very difficult to make up to date dinosaur materials since the research in the area causes frequent changes, but this course did a great job. I also appreciated the in-depth look at a specific ecosystem and some species rather than just general overviews of dinosaur groups. Great work!

Amazing staff of paleontologists, scientists, forum moderators and video editors. This course was absolutely brilliant. In a way, it also influenced and shaped my future, as I now know that I can follow my scientific dreams and Paleo/Animalistic interests. I look forward to the next classes!

Overall a great course. If you're interested in dinosaurs yet and need to dip your toes into the subject before considering it as a career choice, definitely a great place to start. That being said, doesn't make you feel like you're missing out on anything, either. Discussion forum filled with helpful staff and fellow learners to answer your questions, too. Highly recommend.

Wonderful course! Dr Pittman is such a great communicator. And although there is is so much material to cover, I think that the Dinosaur ecosystems team did an outstanding job in summerizing the information while keeping our interest at its highest level. It was also great to here from paleontology's legends such as Professor Xing and Dr Norell. I will definitely join you for the second version of the course!!! Thanks so much!

Great course! Interesting and informative content, great video quality, beautiful dinosaur art, and interesting guest scientist all contributed to making this a wonderful learning experience. Especially valuable was how Dr. Pittman was able to incorporate his recent work and the work of his colleagues. Well presented by Dr. Pittman with expert commentary by Prof. Xu Xing. Congratulations to the Dinosaur Ecosystems team for creating this great course.

This online course is amazing of its vivid teaching video, detailed explanation from expert in paleontology, clear pictures, charts, demonstration and real fossil. Comparing fossil in Erlian with those in general gives more and detailed information about classification, habitats of dinosaurs in different stages.

The content is clear and divided into small chunks - well, sometimes too small, because sometimes the connection in the story is lost and the sentences give you isolated pieces of information. The questions are almost always "solvable" when you watch the videos and have the glossary at hand. The value of the course is that it is focused around the many finds in Erlian, so it is not a complete course on dinos, but almost. The instructor did a very good job in presenting the subject at hand - and a small applause for his english, which was easy to follow. Also the "last minute scoop" of his findings were a nice look into the spearhead of dino research - nice touch. But maybe the best find in this course - and what it sets apart from the others i've followed so far, is that the questions were discussed in the extra weekly video. Very nice to think of this, and it really showed true interaction. The easter egg (the poster) was a nice a... I've taken paleontological courses before, but this one is different from the usual 20-minutes-long videos. Topics are brought up in 1-3 minute long videos, enough to keep you interested, but yet full of information. Practice quizzes were also helpful, and final quizzes were easy enough after watching the videos and solving the practice quizzes. I liked the real-life problems and applications, lab videos, and recent discoveries - this course gives you the latest updates in form of roundup videos, and discusses the most interesting forum questions as well, so it's easy to get and stay involved. All in all, a great course, I'd like to see a sequel.

It is my first Dinosaur Course which is good experience about Dinosaur Ecosystem including their classification, habitats, diets and growth. It is amazing that presentation is clear, understandable with reasonable knowledge check and assessment for review and rethink. However, the discussion forum provide a good way to ask questions with speedy answering, and students are easy to discuss their problems with people from different country. I like it so much.

The videos are clear and understandable. However, the assessment was a little bit too hard for a beginner like me, who does not even know the names of most dinosaurs.

The course is great for children. It is very informative. With lots of demonstrations. It is just a bit long for study every week. We are spending a lot more than 3 hours a week. Maybe it is because i am a ten years old boy in hongkong and that my mother language is not english.
