Course Description

DNA encodes our genetic information and is passed on within cells to maintain living organisms and to produce the next generation. The recognition of DNA as the genetic material and the ensuing identification of its structure and coding mechanism were both revolutionary and foundational.  These discoveries led to transformational integration across the biological sciences with a common understanding of this fundamental unit of life! Join this exploration of DNA structure, packaging, replication, and manipulation.

The course utilizes video lectures, research articles, case studies, and molecular models to convey information. The course grade will be based on questions with each video lecture, quizzes, homework, and a final exam.

It was really good to learn as there was interesting case studies, which was very helpful. Quizzes that were conducted gave more pictures on the topic where people can easily learn. Videos were simple and easy to understand.

The class was very informative, and incredibly useful for learning the basics of genetics for someone who had never taken a genetics class. It aligns really closely with the "DNA and Biotechnology" section in the 2nd edition in the Kaplan MCAT Biochemistry Book for any other pre-meds out there who want a secondary explanation to their MCAT books. The only part of any related MCAT review for this topic would be a brief discussion of Oncogenes, and the various mechanisms of DNA repair (base excision repair, nucleotide excision repair). Overall, the lectures are great, and I would recommend this course to someone who wants to review basic genetics in a clear and reasonable compact manner.

I really liked the course. I come from a medical career but did not have such a science based approach in my medical career but appreciated this approach in your course. It was excellent but my old brain will have to review it several times.

this is my second course from RICE university. the other was also about DNA, the proteins. i really enjoy learning from this university so far. the videos are informative and i very much enjoyed the homework for this course and found it a lot of fun. i don't have good knowledge on this subject yet so found some parts too hard for me but stuff is sinking in and i will do more courses to become more knowledgable. thank you for giving me the opportunity for me to learn.
