Course Description

Too often modern cities and suburbs are disorganized places where most new development makes daily life less pleasant, creates more traffic congestion, and contributes to climate change. This trend has to change; and our course is going to show you how.

Ecodesign means integrating planning, urban design and the conservation of natural systems to produce a sustainable built and natural environment. Ecodesign can be implemented through normal business practices and the kinds of capital programs and regulations already in use in most communities. We will show you how ecodesign has already been used for exceptional projects in many cities and suburbs—from Hammarby Sjöstad in Stockholm to False Creek North in Vancouver to Battery Park City in Manhattan, as well as many smaller-scale examples that can be adopted in any community.

Cities and suburbs built according to ecodesign principles can and should become normal, instead of just a few special examples, transforming urban development into desirable, lower-carbon, compact and walkable communities and business centers.

As this course describes specific solutions to the vexing urban challenges we all face, course participants can see how these ideas might be applied in their own area. Participants will learn the conceptual framework of ecodesign, see many real, successful examples, and come to understand the tools, processes, and techniques for policy development and implementation.

Ecodesign thinking is relevant to anyone who has a part in shaping or influencing the future of cities and suburbs – citizens, students, designers, public officials, and politicians. At the conclusion of the course participants will have the tools and strategies necessary to advocate policies and projects for a neighbourhood or urban district using the ecodesign framework.

Course contents were conclusive, informative, instructors had passion in explaining there thoughts all the way until the last second of the course, the material provided were little short comparing to the ideas explained, never the less this doesn't reduce the value being offered and the clarity of the ideas begin explained.

Optimistic, inspiring and plausible. This was a really interesting course that has made me want to learn more about the topic (and one day to have a job related to it?). Each chapter was a good length, not overly detailed for me at my introductory level. But enough to get me interested.

Ecodesign for cities and suburbs' course was very very optimist. thus we could comprehend that global warming is an global problem, but we can mitigate local trough all the principle, axioma, and very very substantial examples.

The Instructors are excellent! Course is awesome! Instructors deeply believe that Ecodesign is a must for streets, neighborhoods and cities and they explain it to you, in a friendly way, with arguments and examples. If before taking the course you had any doubts in Ecodesign, surely after these doubts will disappear.

I'm happy to have chosen this course, it seemed very complete and complementary to my knowledge of architecture and urbanism. Excellent instructors, concrete content and well-explained, diverse activities that encourage individual participation and interaction with other colleagues. And above all, I liked the recommendations from other sources to expand the experience in eco-design. Now, I'm working hard on my portfolio.

Course is well-done. Practical and updated content, not only for people studying/working in the built environment industry but also for general public to understand how things work; Lecturers are well-experienced, thoughtful, unbiased, and explain the topic very clearly. Questions in "Exploration" provoke thoughts. Good discussion board participation, but sometimes lack of direction with the substance of discussion topics. Only improvement that I would suggest to edX is to add the function of giving users notification when they receive feedback and responses, even better if tagging function is added.

Much better than I thought! It is a very instructive course, you'll never regret to take it. Every test after lectures is to make sure that you have understood the concept, so there is no pressure on tests. You may take notes because some points are really useful - if you are an architecture or urban planning student.

Enjoyed this course immensely. I care deeply about how humans effect the environments they they live in but there always seemed to be so much contention during communications between developers, governments and private citizens, if the public even gets a voice in plans. I've learned practical and rational methods to communicate clear points about ecodesign and how our cities can be better places. It is important to have this portfolio as a private citizen so that when I do get a chance to connect with city planners I have concrete points to discuss.

The course is fresh and full of practical tips. Once you finish one week then you´ll feel the urgent need to begin the next one! Both instructors are plenty of experience and have a natural capacity to teach and make it light and interesting, so the time is well invested. The provider uses an easy system to navigate in the course as well as a staff always willing to help, so in every way I may recomend this course. Thanks to everyone who makes it possible!

Definitely, I would recommend this course. All the content is very interesting and relevant. The information, concepts and great examples of successful stories shared in the video-lectures are very inspiring and give us a glimpse of how cities could be better and enjoyable places for people if these types of ideas were widely spread and implemented. The instructors are great. They are very clear, thorough and effective at explaining the topics. The different types of exercises are very helpful. They make us think about local problems in our cities, as well as offer an opportunity to learn about urban issues in other cities of the world by reading other learners’ examples. I really enjoyed taking the Ecodesign for Cities and Suburbs course. It was dynamic, with many exercises that lead us to reflect on our local problems under the challenge of solutions to global problems and in the light of experiences of localities around the world. The course is very motivating for proactive attitudes to make positive changes in our community.
