This course is like a swimming course in which they hand you a manual on how to swim – or worse even: a manual on how to TEACH somebody how to swim – upon which you are told to jump into the water and swim. Instead of teaching us things, we got the assignment to think and write about stuff. For instance: we were given the definition of what a rhetorical situation is. And then we were asked to write our thoughts about the concept “rhetorical situation”. My thoughts are: give us some examples of rhetorical situations and how writers deal with them, and then I can tell you my thoughts. The essays we had to read were interesting: people explaining exercises for learning how to write. Why didn’t we do these exercises, instead of reading about them ? Of course, any writing assignment will improve your writing. And writing assignments there were more than enough in this course. But what is lacking is the focus on acquiring speci... I didn’t finish this course, for me it was not worth the effort.

I am Girish Dharap from India. In spite of some negative comments, I join this course with an intent to write which is essential for my profession as a Free lance Corporate Trainer. I found the course structure rigorous and effective, "No Gains, without Pains" so I guess we should be ready for more to come...Thank you ASU and Edx.

Excellent content and structure. This is a composition course, then learners are expected to write a lot. What I like about the activities is the methodology since participants are invited to reflect a lot, revise, correct, etc., exactly what writers do in real life. In short, there are demanding but rewarding assignments, lectures are high quality and help students, in my opinion, to understand the topics easily. The instructors are nice and care about learners' challenges.

Arizona (EdX Partnership) Came back after decades away from being at college. And took 5 courses through the ASU program and did exceptionally well, which I found out down the road, I can apply for College Credit through Arizona State University which was amazing opportunity for an old timer like myself to apply for college credit while working for my second bachelors degree at Nazarene Bible College (CO) and my second Associate at Fredrick Community College (MD) both allowing me to apply the 5 classes/16 units towards my general electives. Arizona State University and edX - THE PARTNERSHIP was amazing, teachers were exceptional- THE SCHOOLING AND EDUCATION - ROCKS! Got to learn from some of the best Professors around and a support team that was unmatched. Thanks again ASU and edX.. WHAT IS THE WORD THE YOUNG CATS USE THESE DAYS???? AWESOME!!!!

I'am planning to develop an academic career, so this course is perfect to me, and despite those negative comments, I think that develop writting skills is a demanding and time-consuming task. My advise: just relax and enjoy the journey.

This course was fantastic and I'm disappointed at the negative comments - it was the first time I'd studied in over 30 years and yes, it was time-consuming but we all knew it would be from the beginning. The teachers were great and always around if we wanted them - I found the Peer Review process very fullfilling. And there was a lot of support from other students - a great course - well worth taking part in.

This course can be taken at two levels: Verified with staff reviews or non-Verified with peer reviews and self-assessments. For college credit you must be verified. Under either option, the course is not over simple: college credit should be more than a very fancy receipt. It is advertised as being a hard course - 18 hours a week recommended time commitment - and for those wishing to get full value for money, that is about what it takes. If you want an easy-A, this is not for you. If you want to learn to think about what is involved in writing well, I recommend this course without any reservation at all.

Dropped after completing week 2. Basically I found it very time-consuming for very little gain. There wasn't enough actual teaching by the tutors for my taste. Having taken two GFA courses before, I’m used to much more video and interactive content instead of reading essay after essay. The discussions boards are an interesting place to hang out but shouldn't be used as a primary place for teaching. I really don't have time to go trawling for relevant information. I wanted knowledge on grammar, on structuring different essays/speeches/etc for different audiences. This course is focused on Ethnography for its large writing projects which isn’t relevant to my goals. Most of the smaller writing journals were about reflecting on a subject, checking the discussion board on what others had written and then writing about that. Other students were providing different point of views and techniques but not the tutors. I'll stick with scie... Dropped after completing week 2. Other students were providing different point of views and techniques but not the tutors. I'll stick with science-based GFA courses as they seem much better suited to the platform. E.g. They can use exams to check factual learning. Too much of this course is peer assessment and even self-assessment. Reading other students views, work and interacting can be interesting, but shouldn’t be the basis of grading in a university-level course. There's no way to ensure uniformity of grades across the students. One self-confident person may write poorly but give themselves a great mark. Someone with low confidence may do themselves down. As a marking system, it contains a lot of bias.

I am enjoying this course so far. It is time consuming and there is a lot of reading and writing, but I feel that it is purposeful and betters my understanding of writing. The course has a clear syllabus and schedule. The instructional staff are quick to respond to questions on the discussion board. The course is mostly based off of self-assessment scores, but if you are honest and here to learn it shouldn't be a problem.

Dropped in week 1. Unclear assignments, duplication of teaching materials, 90% self assessed so you can give yourself full marks through the entire course and even if you are making no attempt at the assignments and skip the few peer reviewed assignments you still come out with an A-grade score. For a course focused on communication skills the course hosts really need to work on their communication skills.

Well, I consider that the content of the course is going to be very useful and valuable to improve my writing skills. I have always liked the English grammar, and writing is the way in which one can demonstrate the ability to use and apply grammar correctly. The instructors are well-known professionals, with great experience and desire to teach and share their knowledge to others. And the Arizona State University is also a well-known University which offers students the possibility to take on-line courses with the quality of on-campus ones. I also want to mention and thank edX, for facilitating the platform to access these online couse. Thank you to all. I look forward to taking this course.
