Course Description

Alexander the Great conquered most of the world known to the ancient Greeks, fused the eastern and western peoples of his empire, and became a god – before his 33rd birthday. This course explores the life, leadership, and legacies of history’s warrior, and one of its most controversial leaders, an ambiguous genius whose story helps us to understand not only the history of warfare, but also different ideas about human sexuality, the history of relations between east and west, and the religious beliefs both of ancient polytheists and modern monotheists.

This was perhaps the most stimulating and astounding MOOC I have ever completed. The story of Alexander is almost unbelievable, yet it seems well documented and not fiction. The instructor captured my imagination with his passion on the topic, and as each week completed, I could hardly wait for the next. Alexander was great by all measurements, yet he was not immortal and was human like us. Throughout the course, I couldn't help imagine what it might have been like to serve with him, and today, this course remains my favorite long after I completed it.

A good, solid course that is a deep dive on Alexander the Great. The course goes into a lot of detail on his battles but in a very relatable way and the lecturer is easy to listen to.
