In this course you’ll learn how flows of capital, people, technologies, ideas and creativity circulate and shape the cultural industry of filmmaking, resulting in transnational co-productions and cross-cultural co-operations. You’ll see how these dynamic processes are inflected in characterization, plot development, and space-time configurations on Hong Kong screens.

Our location in the cultural crossroads of Hong Kong allows us to introduce you to film professionals such as director Mabel Cheung and Andrew Lau, producer John Sham, film festival director Roger Garcia, and other guests, talking candidly about the industry.

During your weeks with us you’ll see demonstrations of martial arts choreography, participate in close analysis of film techniques, investigate Hong Kong global stardom, uncover the reasons for the worldwide appeal of genres such as the kung fu film, and nurture a comparative and critical understanding of issues of gender, race, migration. Best of all you’ll partner with leading researchers in the field to appreciate Hong Kong’s contribution to world cinema.

Please watch these films so that you can get the most out of the course content. Please note that you will need to acquire and watch the films on your own. We advise you see the films before each week’s material.

Here is the list of films for each week.

Week 1 – any Jackie Chan film (optional)

I enjoyed this course very much. I love Asian cinemas and it was really enjoyable to listen to the ideas of Prof. Marchetti, Prof. Magnan-Park and Prof. Ford week after week. I devoted every Sunday morning to listen to their very informative and intriguing lectures – for me this course was not only an educational material, but also a superb entertainment. I had the opportunity to reorganise my already existing knowledge about HK cinema, and received a fresh, new perspective in order to understand more deeply certain features of this (film) culture. Following the film and literature recommendations of the lecturers I have found many valuable resources that I will be able to use in my work when teaching Asian cinemas. I will definitely recommend this course to my film students. I hope that HK University and the lecturers of this course will continue to produce new materials related to HK cinema in the future. For example, I would be extremely happy to see a course about the female film makers of Hong Kong. Very much looking forward to see further courses about HK cinema from the producers of this course!

This was a great intro course, as well as a refresher, for understanding Hong Kong cinema and globalization. It's also an excellent teaching resource. I like to download the lectures and assign them as reference material for my students when I want them to brush up on certain discourses in Hong Kong cinema and Hong Kong studies more generally. The structure is also very well done. I highly recommend this for students new to Hong Kong cinema as well as more experienced scholars who want to brush up.

This course is an excellent introduction to Hong Kong cinema and it's global influence through popular culture flows. The content is easily approachable by the neophyte viewer, but also provides a good amount of theory and discussion for both advanced students and cinephiles. The six topics spread over six weeks give a good range of coverage, but also leave room for further expansions of the course. The instructors (Professors Marchetti, Ford, and Magnan-Park) are leaders in terms of academic publications on the subject of Hong Kong cinema, and bring a variety knowledge which they are eager to share with learners. If you are a fan of Hong Kong cinema, on any level, then this course is for you.
