This course from the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative and HarvardX seeks to prepare learners to recognize and analyze emerging challenges in the humanitarian field. The course explores the ethical and professional principles that guide humanitarian response to conflict and disaster. Participants will learn the legal and historical frameworks that shaped these principles, test their applicability to the challenges faced by humanitarian actors today.

Through four case studies covering the responses to crises in Goma (Zaire), Somalia, the Balkans, Afghanistan and Pakistan, participants will engage with Harvard faculty, current practitioners, and one another. These cases introduce major trends affecting the current landscape of humanitarian response – including rapid population displacement, violence against aid workers, and civil-military engagement. Thoughtfully engaging with this course will prepare participants to be informed and aware humanitarian practitioners, scholars, policy-makers, and global citizens.

I have been working as a humanitarian professional for the last 6-7 years, and have learned that practical application of the humanitarian principles highly depend on individual persons as well as organizational commitment to effectively build capacity in this regard. Hence, such kinds of focused capacity building curriculum with ongoing review, learning from experience and replication of best practices play very important role. So that individual humanitarian workers as well as organization can internalize the principles as their core value in any humanitarian action.

I am quite impressed with this course. It has exposed me to see critical elements in Humanitarian Actions that were hitherto unknown to me. Case studies are real time and brought us face to face with realities. It is a study that should be widely circulated in the field of Humanitarian Actions for everyone engaged in that activity to undertake.

The course content is very much appreciated and welcomed at this era where the world is wavering by conflicts in all its forms. The Trainers are hailed for creating a means through which peace lovers can acquire knowledge in order to better fight for peace. I have a good Humanitarian response acquired both in my career as Cameroon Police and during my serving the United Nations as peacekeeper since 2000 to date. While with UN, I performed as CIVPOL, UNPOL and as well as UN security officer; with the function of UN Security Investigator. I deem these courses a great step forward to enhance my peace building and resolution capacity.

I have been working in Humanitarian field since 2003, and conducted several humanitarian missions. Also, in July 2016, I attended the BIOFORCE training on "Management and Leadership in Humanitarian emergencies". I am happy to learn this courses in order to : (1) increase my capacity and (2) share my experience with other participants. I would also suggest to not only send video to learners, but also provide "off line documents/slides/pdf pages" to download for reading even out of the internet net work. Regards !!
