Course Description

Human rights are developed through the constant dialogue between international human rights bodies and domestic courts, in a search that crosses geographical, cultural and legal boundaries. The result is a unique human rights grammar, which this course shall discuss and question, examining the sources of human rights, the rights of individuals, the duties of States, and the mechanisms of protection.

We shall rely extensively on comparative material from different jurisdictions, to study a wide range of topics including, religious freedom in multicultural societies, human rights in employment relationships, economic and social rights in development, or human rights in the context of the fight against terrorism.

This course has been of great use for me. Since I graduated from Law School I’ve been quite lost regarding which area I would be working with. With the course, I became interested in improving my English skills and I’ve been considering working with human rights law, though I’m not sure how this actually works, but I’ll be checking it out. The platform is very easy to work with, the discussion sections and the exercises where very clarifying to me and it was very interesting to see other points of view from people from around the world. The structure of the course is incredible, although it involves a lot of different matters, it has been very didactic. I think it is hard but worth it , i discovered areas still unknown for me through all the modules included in the course I will highly recommend it. The instructor was excellent introducing the subjects in every module and the content interactive with the discussions and small test that help you with the final test.

A farce. They are not just despite they are in Law. Worthless in terms of meaning. I hope you see that in life we must be honest. The International Law is far away of being a real Law but politics are the real reason of this course, but you got to be in silence because these guys do not respect any review.

The course is designed excellently covering all the aspects of international human rights law with great illustration of relevant case laws. The great aspects of course is the lot of knowledge, maximum reading material for content coverage and video lectures. The part of summary before the section test is superb for reviewing the whole contents covered in that section. On the other hand students' involvement in the discussion parts can be increased with changing interface. I am thankful for the faculty for perfectly designing the course and providing the great knowledge.

This is a really excellent course, well organized and selected material as well. It widens my knowledge in this field. The assessment system is friendly as it is not too hard to gain access to the certificate. The debate/discussion is quite good but indeed it is very hard to find answers for any inquiry arisen because of many comments existed.

I found the material challenging but well-organized. The explanations provided in the videos and in the answers to the quizzes were very helpful --- an effective learning tool. I was motivated to work through the course content because I saw the relevancy of the issues presented to current events. I believe I now have a solid grasp of international human rights law, and know where to go to look for the answers. Thank you.

Prof. De Schutter, just as his colleagues who provide the other courses on International Law from UCL, knows his subject to the detail. The presentation is different from the others, and gives a nice change. I really appreciated the exhaustive rational he provides in the answer to the questions. It helps to understand International Human Rights Law on a more fundamental level, and shows how to reason towards the most appropriate answer in a complex and active field of law.

Dear Professor, Why the due date for final essay is 2 weeks earlier than course deadline ? That does not make a sense and it is unfair. If I cannot have the final exam at the end of course then at least it should not grade as final(!). I have completed the whole course and found out that I had already missed half part of final exam. Than what is the difference between auditing course and paying for Verified Certifcate? I want to take the Final Essay but i cannot. Please help me and give me the topic. Muhammed

Interesting material, but not much interaction. Canned lectures and zero input by the professor in the discussions. Tests were not always based on underlying material and brought in other twists that were not apparent from the reading.

They are not giving the essay topic. Student time is wasted. They are not giving verified certificate. They are unresponsive. Harassment of students. There was no need of essay if no follow up is done. Students are stuck and they cannot proceed.

An exciting journey in Human Rights law. First I wondered if I could follow it as I am not a lawyer nor an fluent English speaker. But even if the first chapter gave me some challenge to face (way of thinking and vocabulary), the whole course was attainable with diligence and involvement. The course is well structured and well balanced between courses, reading and exercises. The Professor give clear notion and explanation with the additional "touch" to be very concerned by the subject and to have experience based on the field. The provider (edX) is running well. I had got only some trouble to load my final essay but it was gently managed by the team. Highly recommended.

The conect was very helpfull, with a lot of essential informations that helped me to know more about the Internacional Human Rights, althought i have studied some of the issues and topics in school because i am a student in University of Tirana ,Faculty of Law. The instructor was clearly at all ,in every lession he explains and discusses. A great way to teach students from all over the world in a simply and serious form. The metodology it's intersting and accessed by everyone. I think Edx courses certificates are very important for students because having a certificate like this, for example;in my country you can have more chances to find a job, to have an intership and to fill out the CV.

The lessons were very intense and I have learned so much even if I haven't finished the course yet. The only challenge that I had was that it did not contain much slides as compared to HarvardX and PennX courses that I took. Having ADHD and being assigned to so many reading materials shuts down my focus and attention span. The first section had videos which totally engaged me and sparked my interest, but in the later parts of the course, I only saw one video of Prof. Schutter then the rest were lenghty texts. Please make more videos and make them more animated. I would love to see Prof. Schutter more explaining each lessons with slides, visual presentations, etc. This would help out a newbie like me to acquire excellent grades and apply it to my volunteer work as a director of fundraising and a civilian task force member for an anti child trafficking organization.
