Course Description

Human rights are developed through the constant dialogue between international human rights bodies and domestic courts, in a search that crosses geographical, cultural and legal boundaries. The result is a unique human rights grammar, which this course shall discuss and question, examining the sources of human rights, the rights of individuals, the duties of States, and the mechanisms of protection.

We shall rely extensively on comparative material from different jurisdictions, to study a wide range of topics including, religious freedom in multicultural societies, human rights in employment relationships, economic and social rights in development, or human rights in the context of the fight against terrorism.

This course has been of great use for me. Since I graduated from Law School I’ve been quite lost regarding which area I would be working with. With the course, I became interested in improving my English skills and I’ve been considering working with human rights law, though I’m not sure how this actually works, but I’ll be checking it out. The platform is very easy to work with, the discussion sections and the exercises where very clarifying to me and it was very interesting to see other points of view from people from around the world. The structure of the course is incredible, although it involves a lot of different matters, it has been very didactic. the Course content was very good and the instructors have organized the course well. I am an assistant professor in zoology and I am new to every word in law, yet I enjoyed the course and its contents. I have learnt many things from this course and I will educate and encourage my students to know the basics of Human Rights and the laws available internationally. Especially for women and the marginalized.

This course is a great experience in the area of Human Rights Law if you are really interested or if you study (like in my case) or work on the field of the Law. I think it is not especially much difficult, but you have to dedicate some notable weekly hours in order to overcome it (60% of the global mark to obtain the certificate). Also, it is helpful to have some familiarity with the law concepts presented. There are many materials (lectures, questions, videos) and a little part of them are dispensable, but you have to answer a test at the end of every section and in the final, so it is important to remember the concepts (luckily, you can review them). In general, I recommend this course provided by Louvain University.

The course’s content is absolutely amazing. Also, the explanation by the professor is very good. However, many times you can't watch videos with explanations, indeed, I believe a thing to enhance is more videos by the professor. Last, you should have more assistants to review the final exam because the time that students must wait is a lot.

Overall I learned a great many new concepts about IHRL, especially as my background is in social equity and not law. Here is my advice for prospective students: 1) There is a lot of legal and UN type language used in the course that most people will not be familiar with. Highlighting and web search will be very helpful. 2) Be aware that the language used in the curriculum is sometimes different in the tests. I'm not sure if this is to purposefully confuse students or not. 3) Some test questions have extremely similar multiple choice answers making it easy to choose the wrong one - I found this particularly frustrating. 4) EDX - A search feature of the entire curriculum, including the readings and videos, would be very helpful. 5) EDX - A downloadable Certificate would be helpful so folks can save it. Thanks UCL/edx! To those who are about to give it a try, be ready to work hard and stay focused. You'll be just fine.

Enjoyed the course though wished for more time to finish the essay. The course content was quite comprehensive and covered a wide number of areas of my professional interest. It would be good to update the materials as some are a bit dated as well. In addition, it would be good to expand the references to capture more writings, precedents and other materials particularly from Asia and African courts and legal scholars to enrich the course and make it more relevant for people from different backgrounds

Its a great course to start with and it really helped me in understanding not just international human rights law, but also where the knowledge of it will take my career to. I learnt alot though some of the contents of this course was too ambiguous at first but in the summing up, you get to put in place all the dots. The discussion group assisted my understanding.i commend prof schutter

I think it is hard but worth it , i discovered areas still unknown for me through all the modules included in the course I will highly recommend it. The instructor was excellent introducing the subjects in every module and the content interactive with the discussions and small test that help you with the final test.

The course is designed excellently covering all the aspects of international human rights law with great illustration of relevant case laws. The great aspects of course is the lot of knowledge, maximum reading material for content coverage and video lectures. The part of summary before the section test is superb for reviewing the whole contents covered in that section. On the other hand students' involvement in the discussion parts can be increased with changing interface. I am thankful for the faculty for perfectly designing the course and providing the great knowledge.

This is a really excellent course, well organized and selected material as well. It widens my knowledge in this field. The assessment system is friendly as it is not too hard to gain access to the certificate. The debate/discussion is quite good but indeed it is very hard to find answers for any inquiry arisen because of many comments existed.

I found the material challenging but well-organized. The explanations provided in the videos and in the answers to the quizzes were very helpful --- an effective learning tool. I was motivated to work through the course content because I saw the relevancy of the issues presented to current events. I believe I now have a solid grasp of international human rights law, and know where to go to look for the answers. Thank you.

Prof. De Schutter, just as his colleagues who provide the other courses on International Law from UCL, knows his subject to the detail. The presentation is different from the others, and gives a nice change. I really appreciated the exhaustive rational he provides in the answer to the questions. It helps to understand International Human Rights Law on a more fundamental level, and shows how to reason towards the most appropriate answer in a complex and active field of law.

Interesting material, but not much interaction. Canned lectures and zero input by the professor in the discussions. Tests were not always based on underlying material and brought in other twists that were not apparent from the reading.

An exciting journey in Human Rights law. First I wondered if I could follow it as I am not a lawyer nor an fluent English speaker. But even if the first chapter gave me some challenge to face (way of thinking and vocabulary), the whole course was attainable with diligence and involvement. The course is well structured and well balanced between courses, reading and exercises. The Professor give clear notion and explanation with the additional "touch" to be very concerned by the subject and to have experience based on the field. The provider (edX) is running well. I had got only some trouble to load my final essay but it was gently managed by the team. Highly recommended.
