Course Description

Human rights are developed through the constant dialogue between international human rights bodies and domestic courts, in a search that crosses geographical, cultural and legal boundaries. The result is a unique human rights grammar, which this course shall discuss and question, examining the sources of human rights, the rights of individuals, the duties of States, and the mechanisms of protection.

We shall rely extensively on comparative material from different jurisdictions, to study a wide range of topics including, religious freedom in multicultural societies, human rights in employment relationships, economic and social rights in development, or human rights in the context of the fight against terrorism.

This course synthesizes very important topics on Human Rights, not just about their juridical foundations but about the recent "trending topics" on the field.

They are not giving the essay topic. Student time is wasted. They are not giving verified certificate. They are unresponsive. Harassment of students. There was no need of essay if no follow up is done. Students are stuck and they cannot proceed.

An exciting journey in Human Rights law. First I wondered if I could follow it as I am not a lawyer nor an fluent English speaker. But even if the first chapter gave me some challenge to face (way of thinking and vocabulary), the whole course was attainable with diligence and involvement. The course is well structured and well balanced between courses, reading and exercises. The Professor give clear notion and explanation with the additional "touch" to be very concerned by the subject and to have experience based on the field. The provider (edX) is running well. I had got only some trouble to load my final essay but it was gently managed by the team. Highly recommended.

The conect was very helpfull, with a lot of essential informations that helped me to know more about the Internacional Human Rights, althought i have studied some of the issues and topics in school because i am a student in University of Tirana ,Faculty of Law. The instructor was clearly at all ,in every lession he explains and discusses. A great way to teach students from all over the world in a simply and serious form. The metodology it's intersting and accessed by everyone. I think Edx courses certificates are very important for students because having a certificate like this, for example;in my country you can have more chances to find a job, to have an intership and to fill out the CV.

The lessons were very intense and I have learned so much even if I haven't finished the course yet. The only challenge that I had was that it did not contain much slides as compared to HarvardX and PennX courses that I took. Having ADHD and being assigned to so many reading materials shuts down my focus and attention span. The first section had videos which totally engaged me and sparked my interest, but in the later parts of the course, I only saw one video of Prof. Schutter then the rest were lenghty texts. Please make more videos and make them more animated. I would love to see Prof. Schutter more explaining each lessons with slides, visual presentations, etc. This would help out a newbie like me to acquire excellent grades and apply it to my volunteer work as a director of fundraising and a civilian task force member for an anti child trafficking organization.

It has been a wonderful experience studying International Human Rights with UCL via Edx. This course is amazingly challenging but very interesting and valuable. I would like to thank Prof.Olivier for being a wonderful lecturer and providing us with all the reading materials and the essential notes. I would like to thank Matthias for providing us good support on the discussion forum. Both of you have done an amazing job. I would have loved to have more lecture videos by Prof.Olivier.

A great introductory course on contemporary international human rights law! I highly recommend it. It provides sufficient information on a variety of topics that you can later pursue on your own, if you are professionally interested in deepening your understanding. Excellent instruction and prompt responses to all student questions/problems. Having at least basic knowledge of international law will definitely be an advantage. In this regard, I highly recommend taking another course in advance - "International Law", also offered by LouvainX.

It was my first MOOC, and I loved it! Being a Ph D. graduate in International Law, and a legal professional in an International organisation, I had some previous knowledge of the issue, but after participating to this course I dramatically improved it. Prof. De Shutter and his team made a great work in organizing a course of the highest quality, but accessible also to those who lack a professional legal background.

I do not have law experience in this subject and english is not my first language, but this course was one of the best and the most professional I had taken. I did not have a problem with completing this course, because all four required information was provided and laid out in a clear and understandable manner. I would recommend to anyone, even without interest law, and desire to know the world around them and their rights

If found this course very useful to get a sense of what international human rights are (the sources of IHR, the debates behind their adoption at international level, their application, through a wide set of institutions, from international to domestic ones). The course deals with more technical aspects of IHR (the various dimensions of discriminations, the notion of absolute rights, etc.) I believe that it provides a good overview of this important topic in international relations and may be useful for the learners in relation to their professional life. As this kind of course is "massive", I consider the involvement and dedication by the instructors (Olivier and Matthias) quite a challenge and I can imagine how difficult it may be to facilitate such a course, with such an amount of learners, with various backgrounds and expectations. I would conclude asking edx to improve the platform, in order to make it more user-friendly a... Thank you for this opportunity to know better on IHR and I'm excited to embark other courses on edx. All the best, Eric

It was the wonderful experience while I had been finding resources as I moved my career from community development to humanitarian protection as an UN staff. As I have any prior knowledge, it was very hard for me to understand and had to read for many times about 10 or more. But I really appreciated the kindness of professor who provided all necessary information in very details we should know even the website link in very humble manners. If I find out such all info by myself, it will take about more than a year. The course is very effective to learn about int'l HR conveniently with the kind effort of Professor. It is very valuable for us who are from least development country and cannot afford to attend such quality education in campus. This course is an invaluable tool for me because it helped me to better understand certain aspects necessary for my work as a human rights defender , I would recommend it to anyone interested in the area to participate in it because it really gives useful tools for those who want to pursue this area. I am very grateful that our instructor was the rapporteur and I regret that my country has not been invited to conduct a site visit so that it finds the situation. Thanks edx, and thanks University of Louvain
