International law can be considered as the law of the international community, the law that governs relations between States. But it also relates to what international organizations do and, increasingly, it concerns individuals, corporations, NGO’s and other non-state actors.

International law can be considered as the law of the international community, the law that governs relations between States. But it also relates to what international organizations do and, increasingly, it concerns individuals, corporations, NGO’s and other non-state actors.

As the world becomes more interdependent and more complex, and as new institutions are put in place to make international law more effective, international law has become an exciting, expanding field. Never before has it been so relied upon, used and developed. Despite their differences in size, power, culture, religion and ideologies, states rely on international law to cooperate and to coexist; they speak the language of international law and international law serves them as an important common language.

This law course will extensively rely on judgments and advisory opinions of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations (UN).

Having acquired a basic knowledge of international law, you’ll find it easier to comprehend this subject in future international law sub-fields, like international human rights, international humanitarian law or international investment law.

This course will teach you what international law is, the role it plays in the world today, how it can be used. You will also gain knowledge to help you better discern legal arguments within the flow of international news and reports.

This course is part of the International Law MicroMasters Program that is designed to give learners a critical understanding of how international relations between States and individuals are dealt with, regarding the law.

The course was very interesting, the instructor really keen to help and support. However there are no credits in the course of attendance (the credits are only in the weekly and final exams) which in combination of the size of material to be studied and understood, makes the course truly challenging. Also in the multiple choices, the options are drafted to have such a similar meaning amongst each other which is an additional unnecessary challenge the students have to deal with, as ultimately the intention is the understanding of the spirit of international law instead of looking to distinguish the right answer from a very small and minor detail that might make an answer right or wrong. This is contrary to the fundamental purpose of education

An excellent course!! Very demanding so its not for the light hearted, but at the same time, quite informative and formative. The International Law course was much more than I expected in the sense that it provides the learner with a solid foundation on principles, concepts, rules and jurisprudence. Professor D´Argent has a capacity to clearly explain complex legal issues, his mastery of the subject matter is unsurpassed. Will look into doing the other courses, I fell it was time and effort well spent.

An excellent course. It gives students a solid foundation in International Law. Professor Pierre is a great teacher, he teaches in a simple and pleasant way. Personally, when I enrolled I expected the course to be more basic, but it turned out to be a challenging course, which I consider a positive aspect. The only point for improvement that I found is in the multiple-choice tests, the way some questions are formulated is confusing and is an unnecessary obstacle when what you really want to see is how much a person has learned in each module. Beyond this, I totally recommend it.

The lessons and reading material for the course were top-notch; I would have liked more writing assignments - perhaps, so as not to impose too heavy a burden upon the faculty, class-reviewed ones.

Very good course. I was very interested with the subject and the course gives very complete and clear explanations. The exemples taken by Prof d'Argent are very interesting, in peculiar all the ICJ cases it cites. The course is not always easy to follow, some chapters are a bit more complicated than others, but it worth going to the end. I recommend it.

Needless to say, I loved this course. International Law has always been an area that piqued my curiosity, and so I appreciated Prof. d'Argent's insights on the subject. I learned a lot during the weeks--months--I took the course. I would like to believe that I'm coming out of this course more knowledgeable and insightful than I was before. Thank you!

The course was really good. The lecturer Pierre D' Argent ensured that the lessons were simplified and that he took time to explain difficult concepts which are normally not easily understood by students who don't have previous experience or knowledge in the subject. The course defines the various concepts in International law and how people can engage in international disputes or incidents at a global level. Kudos to the entire team at Université catholique de Louvain and EdX on this amazing collaboration.

The content was very inspiring for me. I have learned a lot i must admit. However the focus on this course is more how to trick and confuse students in the various weekly tests. Its a shame really and i am disappointed. Université catholique de Louvain is teaching about justice but ironically the tests are not really fair. to many TRICK questions on exams that are totally not needed for this course. We are here to learn and to use the knowledge we got in real life and situations. By asking extremely difficult questions in such a short time, the university prevents students from getting the certificate and prevent the students to fulfill their dreams.

This course was very well structured and delivered. Professor Pierre d'Argent was extremely articulate, precise and was able to make difficult concepts and legal distinctions immediately accessible and understandable. Through these few weeks of teaching, he has stimulated in me a deep interest in international law which I am sure will remain with me for life. I cannot thank the Professor, UCL and edx.org for bringing the course online so that people all over the world can access the profound knowledge and insight that Professor Pierre d'Argent has on the subject, and benefit from it.

Thanks to the course instructor and every other person involved in creating this program. I enjoyed the study and have learned a lot. Many things I would need to still have to relearn. In any case, I really needed this course to help me grow and develop my knowledge and materials on the course. Kind regards.

Excellent. Content was basic but thorough and it increased my knowledge a lot. It was not easy but challenging and activities were engaging. Reading material was very good. I enjoyed every bit of it. But at times I was frustrated due to the absurd language (phrasing) used in question. And essay deadline should have been with end of course. Instructor was very good his delivery of lecture was clear. It was honour to get taught by such a qualified instructor. Edx website was simple and easy to access course. I hope more courses would be offered from Harvard, Cambridge and other prestigious universities in future. And I hope that more universities will offer their International Law courses online as I found only University of Louvain doing that. Overall it was a great experience and I hope to pick more courses in future as well. Thank you for offering this course.

The course was very intensive and useful in dealing with issues relating to international law. It is challenging to learn new concepts and principles of customary international law at first but through the course I was really satisfied, the content fits well and the instructor simplified the concepts in such a way for participants to understand. I would like to acknowledge everyone for knowledge sharing and exchanges throughout this course not forgetting the provider of the course for providing this very useful learning platform.

A good course to challenge the mind to go its length in thinking critically with an intellectual tutor sponsoring its guidance. Its not too easy for everyone but a little easier for law students and holders. Its entails devout attention. despite its difficuties due to its exam structure and the complex nature of the issues involved. It really helped the mind assuage what they already know prior, in the prof teachings.

iTS A BADLY DESIGNED COURSE FOR ITS INTWNDED PURPOSE AS AN INTRODUCTION, AND IS BASED ON PRIOR KNOWLEDGE, I DO NOT RECIMMEND FOR YOUNG BEGINNERS, ITS A PATHTIC COURSE DESPITE THE EXPERRT INSTRUCTOR. WHO HAS MORE KNOWLEDGE AS TO THE FLOW OF DISCUSSION THAN THE COURSE DESIGNER WHO HAS ATTEMPTED TO ENCAPSULTE TOO MUCH INFO IN TOO SHORT A TIME WITH IRREGULAR AND BULKY ASSESSMENTS. I WAS REALLY DISAPPOINTED WITH THE COURSE GIVEN THE FEES.

I have an engineering background. I took this course because I wanted to develop basic understanding of international law and I am truly satisfied with the course. The professor has an ocean of knowledge. Quizzes/Exam give a bit of tough time but the course ends up developing sound understanding of basic international law in the student.

The course had a lot of valuable information for an introductory level and great examples of each concept and principle. The only disappointment is the wording in the exams, both the multiple choice and exam questions. It is not always clear what is being asked and with some multiple choice questions, two answers are the same bit with different wording.

I found it excellent. Is it challenging? Yeah, it really is. But that's because its subject is challenging: IPL is a very long subject, and let me tell you that this is an introductory course only, as some matters are treated shortly (but greatly summed up). The instructor is one of the greatest in the subject, so it's a total privilege to 'attend' one of his classes. If you like IPL, you'll definitely learn a lot from this course.

The course is interesting and the professor is an expert scholar in the field. However, it is in contrary to the fundamental purpose of education and learning in this century specially when it comes to exams, essay corrections and grading. Some teaching assistants lack relativity, flexibility and a prior experience in grading and evaluation. They also don't consider whether you come from law or non law background through out their evaluation. The course also lacked any case studies along the curriculum and all of a sudden you will be thrown into cold water to find yourself sinking in the final exam's essay. MCQs are also very hard with minor differences between choices.

I found the course to be thoroughly enjoyable and informative. Although international law in general has many critics, this course helps you see and understand how international law impacts everyday life and state relations. It provides a real introduction to the subject and it makes me feel prepared and excited to take the other courses in this series. An excellent course which provides with the needed knowledge for being updated in the content and evolution of international law and for refreshing concepts learned, in my case, so long ago at university. Professional needs encouraged me to take the course and changed my perceptions in certain international legal aspects related with my every day practice linked with construction, public works and public services contracts and foreign investments in several sectors. The professor was outstanding. He was very didactic and explanations were clear. The material is unvaluable and, to me, fascinating. I expended long hours reading it.
