International law can be considered as the law of the international community, the law that governs relations between States. But it also relates to what international organizations do and, increasingly, it concerns individuals, corporations, NGO’s and other non-state actors.

As the world becomes more interdependent and more complex, and as new institutions are put in place to make international law more effective, international law has become an exciting, expanding field.

Never before has it been so relied upon, used and developed. Despite their differences in size, power, culture, religion and ideologies, states rely on international law to cooperate and to coexist; they speak the language of international law and international law serves them as an important common language.

This law course will extensively rely on judgments and advisory opinions of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations (UN).

Having acquired a basic knowledge of international law, you’ll find it easier to comprehend this subject in future international law sub-fields, like international human rights, international humanitarian law or international investment law.

This course will teach you what international law is, the role it plays in the world today, how it can be used. You will also gain knowledge to help you better discern legal arguments within the flow of international news and reports.

This course is part of the International Law MicroMasters Program that is designed to give learners a critical understanding of how international relations between States and individuals are dealt with, regarding the law.

At the moment I'm working my way through week six and I have to admit, that if this course is not perfect it is at least near perfection. Presentation is great, preparation of all the study material is very good, quizzes and tests are fair (and sometimes hard). So if you are interested in the topic, this is one of the best possibilities to dive into it. I'm already looking forward to the other courses of Louvain.

Very interesting course on the other hand the weekly examinations mainly focus on judgments of the ICJ what I find absurd. The examinations are not about a real understanding of the matter but only about judicial decisions. In addition a very high level of English is required in order to be able to understand the questions that are mostly posed in a negative way just making things complex unnecessarily and frustrating.

Thanks to Prof Pierre d'Argent & UCL staff for an excellent course. It has given me much deeper knowledge of how to interpret treaties and, indeed, media hype concerning such current affairs. I enjoyed the slow & steady way that International Law has unfolded over the decades or centuries and recognise we have come very far from the dark ages. But there are still those who insist 'might is right': that is no longer appropriate in a global world. Human Rights for all are now paramount ~ the same law should apply equally to all. A second reason for this is that we now face planetary problems, such as climate change, biodiversity and habitat loss, global tipping-points, and diminishing natural resources such as water. The missing part of having a world living in peace is the absence of enforcement ... what do you do about a powerful nation that does not want to be bound by its treaty obligations? The UN, ICJ & ICC are major steps in the right direction ~ however, progress can be extremely slow. EDX remains my favourite MOOC provider and I see a steady evolution of the platform. A challenge in this course was 'timed' exams; slow internet connections don't help. A particular strength was the weekly composite handouts, an excellent resource; and the ease of downloading lecture videos. All in all a most enjoyable course, yet hard at times. Merci Beaucoup!

Thank you Prof. Pierre d’Argent and UCL. You are great. Rule of love vs rule of law Once upon a time, the society has to be ruled with the rule of love; when the love was sacrificed by human being, men had to make rule of law in order to bring the order back to the society....... With another words we have nowadays the manmade laws and regulations. These rules have got their own limitations. So both freedom of expression and privacy rights have own limits and are to be respected under the constitutional law.

I want to emphasize that it was given too little time for exams for non-native speakers.Nevertheless the course was very interesting and very specific, I consider it one of the best courses in public international law. Due to the fact that Prof. D'Argent is one of the most prominent specialist in this field I'll try to keep myself updated with his potential new courses or conferences.

This is probably my favorite course provided by edX. Professor d’Argent does an amazing job of explaining the material. Yes, the course is a little difficult if you have no prior law experience, but if you pay attention, you can really learn a lot.

This course gives students an understanding of how international law evolved and functions. I found the lectures exceptional in their clear presentation and insight on the processes used by the courts. No one, taking this course, can possibly walk away not having learned a great deal about international law. The material was very interesting (throughout) and well-organized. For me, studying legal terms and seeing them used, in context, was exceptionally good. The same words are used repeatedly; quickly students become familiar with and confident in applying them. Professor Pierre d'Argent deserves the highes praise for producing such a marvelous course. First the nature and relevance of the subject were oulined, along with a brief history of its development. At all times International Law was presented as a dytnamic concept, which was developing as we speak. The examinations were rigorous, thus ensuring that students received a thorough grounding in International law sources. Personally I sense that I have been empowered to look afresh at the world of International affairs and to re-evaluate institutions such as the United Nations and the Security Council, which we may all take for granted but which few have the opportunity to study. I have enrolled for the course on International Human Rights Law as I see the MOOC concept, and especially its delivery through EDX, as pointing to the future of education. This was a substantial course. It comprised exceptionally high quality lectures and supporting learning materials. It provided the opportunity to deepen knowledge and engage with others as well as the faculty. For me, it was a surprise as to the quality of what was taught, the level of engagement (more so than with paid distance learning I have completed) and ultimately the knowledge and skills I have acquired. I thoroughly recommend this course, the subject matter and Pierre d'Argent and his team.

A heartfelt thank you to Professor d'Argent and staff for presenting such an excellent online law course. I found it top notch and absolutely packed with information regarding international law; what is is, how it works and ideas towards how this field of law might look in the future.
