Course Description

We live in a world of numbers. You see them every day: on clocks, in the stock market, in sports, and all over the news. Algebra is all about figuring out the numbers you don't see. You might know how fast you can throw a ball, but can you use this number to determine how far you can throw it? You might keep track of stock prices, but how can you figure out how much money you've made (or lost) in the market? And you may already know how to tell time, but can you calculate at what times a clock's hour and minute hands are exactly aligned? With algebra, you can answer all of these questions, using the numbers you already know to solve for the unknown. Algebra is an essential tool for all of high school and college-level math, science, and engineering. So if you're starting out in one of these fields and you haven't yet mastered algebra, then this is the course for you!

Excellent course. I'm taking this as a review and also taking geometry. I'd like to see other courses such as college algerbra, trig, and calc.

The saying goes that if you don't understand a subject to the point that you can explain it so that a 3 year old can understand (or as techies say, so that your grandma can understand you), then you don't really know the subject that you are teaching. Unlike other online math courses, these math course offered on EdX by SchoolYourself do much more than just give you a few examples for you to just copy in solving their problems. SchoolYourself actually teaches you the math behind the math, in such away that is so simple and clear that anyone can grasp the concepts. If you still don't understand, then the staff are very, very active in the discussion forums during the course, often responding within a couple of hours and working with you until you fully learn and understand the concepts. When a problem arises and they realize that the lesson wasn't clear enough, they modify the lessons to be more clear for other students. The interactive software used by SchoolYourself is second to none. The teachers voice is very soothing and comforting, giving the feeling of a loving, kind, patient master teaching his apprentice. This helps greatly in reducing stress while learning a stressful subject such as math. The only requirement is to do the reviews accompanied with each lesson. While doing the reviews, there are no penalties for wrong answers and generally, you only have to solve a handful of problems before receiving full credit for completing the review. The reviews are also designed in such away that they adjust themselves to the students abilities. If you find that the problems in the beginning are too easy, simple and not challenging enough, it won't be long before the reviews 'realize' that it is too easy for you and they auto-adjust themselves to start providing more challenging problems in the future. I feel that I can finally learn, even master, math using these courses on EdX provided by SchoolYourself. In other words, these lessons are designed in such a way that they actually promote self-confidence in one's abilities to learn math. I am certain that you will also have a wonderful experience with SchoolYourself. No point in ending this review with wishing you good luck; with these courses, the Law of Cause and Effect genuinely apply. That is to say, the way these interactive courses are designed, you are guaranteed to see results in direct proportion to the amount of effort that you put into it.
