We highly recommend preparing for the Competency Exam certification by using the current course materials and MIT OpenCourseWare problems. The next Competency Exam will be open October 24, 2017 to October 31, 2017.

7.00x is an introductory level biology course hosted by professor Eric Lander, who was one of the leaders of the Human Genome Project. The course content reflects the topics taught in the MIT introductory biology courses and many biology courses across the world. As a learner, you will first focus on the structure and function of macromolecules such as DNA, RNA and proteins. You will discover how changes in the structure of some of these macromolecules alter their functions and what the implications of such changes have on human health. As you continue in the course, you will apply an understanding of heredity and information flow within cells to human health and disease and will learn about molecular biological techniques and their potential to impact our changing world. After you complete this course, you will have a foundation in biology that will allow you to understand the remarkable medical revolution going on today.

MITx 7.00x: Introduction to Biology – The Secret of Life will let you explore the mysteries of biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology, recombinant DNA technology and genomics, and rational medicine. We are excited to take this journey with you!

Dr. Lander's course is a rare gem. He is an outstanding speaker and his enthusiasm held my attention throughout all of the lectures. The course is very polished and well-organized -- much more than any other course I have taken either online or at the University. The course does a great job of explaining basic concepts and also showing real life examples. I have a very strong background in biology but I learned many things I didn't know about the Human Genome Project and the history of genetics. I think anyone involved in teaching biology at any level should take this course for professional development but also for enjoyment and to rekindle your excitement for the subject. It is not an easy course, but if you listen to all the lectures and take all the quizzes before the deadlines you should have no trouble passing - just don't expect to get a perfect score! It is always better to make a "cold" analysis so I decided to let sometime pass after finishing the course to write a review. Several months have passed since I finished it and here you have the "objective" opinion of a 51-year-old practicing pathologist. It is an outstanding course. The contents and the way that they are explained are exquisite. It is the best example I have ever seen of how to teach. The historical perspective it gives its just amazing and enormously helpful to understand new discoveries. I printed almost all the classic references (from Mendel to the last Nobel prices papers) provided and have fused them into a beautiful book. Similarly, all the computer programs that allow you to analyze and design molecules or to dissect a gene are wonderful. The course is demanding and many of the tests and problems are complex. It remains with you even after turning off the computer. Do not be afraid, if you study you will pas... Congratulations to the teaching staff and for those who are thinking of doing the course do not doubt. It has been my honor and pleasure to share the course from this side of the computer. Lovely hours !!

I was very impressed and challenged by this course, despite some background biology knowledge. Every aspect of the course was well-designed and executed--the lectures were inspiring, the practice problems were rigorous, the additional materials provided (white board images, reading materials, etc) were very helpful. I would recommend this course to anyone interested in biology, especially teachers, but be prepared to work for it!

This course was amazing. It was an honor to be given the opportunity to sit in on the lectures of Dr. Lander who is both at the forefront of his field of study and a uniquely gifted teacher - a rare combination. I regret that we are not allowed six stars for the instructor. There were a few minor technical/software glitches with the occasional homework problem or Deep Dive but nothing that detracted from the overall excellence of this course. Thank You.

It was such a privilege to learn from Prof. Lander and the students at MIT. The course was incredibly extensive yet well thought out, flowed incredibly well and provided multiple resources other than the lecturers (videos from students, visual displays, lab videos) that made what you were learning as hands on as possible short of being in an actual lab. On top of that, Prof. Lander provided multiple real world example (diseases, court cases, discoveries made in the last decade) that made the material very relevant and modern. The practice exams were well designed, flexible and featured wonderful tools like genome editors and molecule visualisations, I couldn't have learn as in-depth as I did anywhere else! So grateful to have had this experience and would recommend it to anyone!

the course is one of the best, but the cost is too high for people from nations other than US and European countries. please look into it, so that as many people as possible, can appreciate the subject matter.

As a chemist, I found Dr. Lander's course such a joyful experience. His story telling of the discoveries that laid the foundation of biology is just superb! I often show some of the videos to my high school daughters and I just could not let go of the excitement this course brings to its audience. What a great teacher, scholar, and a communicator! Thank you! I was so glad to have come cross to this course.

This was my first online course and I can only recommend, instructor is very clear and motivating, i enjoyed every single minute of it, thanks to Professor Lander ! But warning, the topic is not that easy, i had to put many hours every week to keep up, go through all the courses, problems, problem sets, practice exam. But it was worth it. I just finished my exams after many days of preparation and I passed !!!! But these exams are long and difficult ! Don't under estimate.

Well arranged course content with lectures, after lecture quizzes and examinations. Scientific learning methods is adopted to enhance the learning process, such as flash cards, interactive genetics "lab" by using VGL, Protein structure display by using JSMOL and etc. Prof Lander is not hurry in flooding us with tons of knowledge but instead, creating an impact (the actual purpose/history of particular area) in our mind prior the insertion of the related knowledge. To me, this has virtually fueled my confidence and passion and I have since can't stop myself trying the quizzes even though they are tough. edX is a great platform but I have dropped my star to 4.5 due to inability to access this course in mobile devices's apps. Hopefully this will be implemented in the future.

This was the first course I took on edx and I can honestly say it ruined all other courses for me! This class was fun, informative and really well put together. Professor lander is beyond engaging and knowledged in his field. I enjoyed all parts of the course, even the interaction between students was great. I loved the 'format' of this course, you see the lectures as they are given to the students at mit and I felt I was there, learning with them! I highly recommend it.

Introduction to Biology - The Secret of Life. One of the best experiences of my life. It has been suggested that "the best science offers the same kind of experience as the best books or films do" (Sean B. Carroll). Dr. Lander's course delivered this “best” experience week after week. And, the content of the course is a must for all computer scientists and engineers seeking to make a difference in the 21st century.
