Course Description

We often have firmly held beliefs about why people think and behave the way they do. Sometimes our intuitions are correct, but often they are not.

Social psychology helps us understand how people think about themselves and other people and what motivates their behaviour in social settings.

This course explores a range of topics in social psychology, from how we think about ourselves, how we think about others, and how we interact and communicate with others. We will also discuss the ways that we can influence others and be influenced by others. Finally, we look at some problematic aspects of human behaviour, such as prejudice and aggression.

You should take this course if you are curious about why we behave the way we do.

This is my very first edX course and though I have not yet completed PSYC1030 as yet, I am finding the subject fascinating, though I will admit that it can be bit of an information overload (for a newbie like me) with all of the different research studies and behaviour models but if you're prepared to stick it out, you'll gain valuable insight into some of the basic understandings of the human psyche & why we do the things we do in various situations. Associate Professor Blake McKimmie's teaching style is engaging, informative and fun whilst I found Professor Roy Baumeister also to be equally engaging, knowledgeable and easy to listen too.

Course content is very useful and would assist people for day to day living. I find it very interesting on how peoples emotions, social behaviour and schemas are used by sales people, charities, political parties and advertisements to persuade people. Even intelligent people are forced to make choices in everyday living through above techniques otherwise they wouldn't make.

PSYC1030 is a great course! The content is extremely relevant to everyday life and in that regard is very interesting. I honestly look forward to watching the lecture videos:) The online learning component works really well because it is self-paced (allowing you take notes and schedule around other commit, ments) and utilises a range of learning techniques, such as short activities or quizzes, that help you retain the information presented. The lecturers are obviously quite knowledgeable and engaging - they've even tried to make the course content humorous at times (and done pretty well!). There are always examples/published psychological studies integrated into the course content to help reinforce your learning and broaden your understanding so I would definitely recommend this course to anyone thinking about taking it!

I love the structure of online lectures and quizzes because this way, lecture speed is controlled by us and we're able to read down properly and take the time to understand what is being said. The lecture videos are informative and the effort that the lecturers have put in to make some sections funny is appreciated.
