Course Description

In this introductory 4-credit hour lecture and laboratory course, we will explore the origins, structure, contents, and evolution of our solar system and exosolar planetary systems. We will cover the history of astronomy, properties of light, instruments, the study of the solar system and nearby stars.

Throughout the course, we will learn about the Discovery Channel Telescope, the Lowell Observatory, the Challenger Space Center, and Meteor Crater, the world’s best-preserved meteorite impact site on Earth. We will also get a chance to virtually walk through the Lunar Exploration Museum and Arizona State University’s Moeur Building, home of the Mars Space Flight Facility where ASU scientists and researchers are using spacecraft instruments on Mars to explore the geology and mineralogy of the red planet.

Even though I thought about not taking this course, believing it was an introductory one, I did manage to learn some new stuff, and, most importantly, to acquire great methodological approaches and pedagogical methods in teaching difficult concepts. I liked the video quality, the memory practice was a nice touch, and loved the opening quotes.

I studied A level physics at college so already knew the basic theory, but the course linked together many different topics which I'd only been taught as standalone parts. It also added in more recent discoveries and missions which were never covered at college, it makes it more interesting and my apply-able than pure theory. Engaging lectures, a sensible amount of content per week for my schedule (I work full time), exercises covered related topics and not just tests of maths ability.

Every single thing in this course was very well designed. Someone obviously put much effort in everything from lessons (which were logical, easy to follow), oral lectures, experts participating other than professor Timms, homework, labs, memory games, quizzes... I am not English speaker, but this was very well presented, making language no issue for me to fully enjoy the course. I also loved the fact that this was somewhat challenging course.

Enthousiastic instructor, the level is quite basic but it covers a lot of ground so there is new material to learn about our solar system. Not too keen on the practical items as they take too much time and it is hard to do these properly in a home situation. I liked the Cerego app to pick up the factual material.

I actually learned a lot from Professor Timmes. Most helpful online course I have taken. Helpful video lectures, discussion boards are taken advantage of throughout the class. Very quick to answer questions.

This was an excellent beginning astronomy class. The math was a little difficult because of how big the numbers were but otherwise it was a great course. Some concepts were easier to understand if you have a background knowledge of physics.

The best course ever. The teacher seems to always know what sort of knowledge, insights he is delivering and where he is getting with things. Easy to follow because things are explained gradually. Very coherent. Very engaging. Assignments are just the right amount of difficulty.

EdX courses are becoming more comprehensive with open textbook provided as well. The text has been updated regularly and last update is listed. The video is not completely up to date. For instance the SETI planet list does not cover 2016 or even all of 2015. Frank was super and fun to watch but I am unable to figure out what making pizza has to do with astronomy. The profs are very approachable and this was the first time that I was not intimidated to ask questions. Many thanks. Very highly recommended course. Only suggestion is to list the time of last update somewhere.

I learnt much from this course. The instructor gave clear explanations. The quantitative questions were interesting and challenging. I signed up as a verified participant for credit eligibility and it was worth every cent I paid.

I really really enjoyed this course! even though I failed. :D I enjoyed the instructor and his style. I loved the material. Its been years since I've gone to school or have been challenged academically. I will take this course again very soon! I have learned and understood so much. I had no idea....thank you, ASU/edx. I wish this was around 20 yrs ago.

Content and interface were both really great. I gave 4 stars for Dr. Tim, because a lot of his lectures seemed a little unpolished, which may admittedly just be a matter of preference. I really liked the interviews with other experts, but the conversations with the undergrad should be removed, because it's just a jumbled mess. Dr. Tim does have a great personality for the camera, though.

The content of this course was very complete and updated. I would like to thank Prof. Timmes and his team for a job well done. What I liked the most was that it kept me always learning and interested in what the next weekly unit had to offer.

See you in the universe. GRACIAS.

I am currently retired and have been looking around to keep my mind in "operation". This was the ideal form to do it. My interest was to learn and was not looking for credits. I took a look at the asigments and homeworks, but did not work hard on them (maybe I should have and will do it in any future course I take). It was all an experience. I am a trained engineer and in my field everything is contained. Astronomy is infinite and this requires a new mind set which I think this course started to teach me. I am formally taking a similar course at the University of Costa Rica and they completed so well Keep the good work

Really opened my eyes.Wish I had better math skills for lab sessions but did my best. I'm afraid I'm hooked as I am continuing with the text through to the end and bought my first binoculars! Thanx, guys!

At first I wasn't a fan, but now I am. The labs can be a real challenge especially without prior experience and they don't help you with them which is odd. Still, I was able to get an A and graduate early so that's nice!

I enjoyed the course very much. The material was presented in a way that all can understand the subject. The instructor kept my attention throughout the course. He explained the weekly topics and what I found very helpful was the lab examples before each lab assignment. As a recommendation maybe posting the problem solutions after the due date of the assignment would help. I would recommend this course to anybody who is interested in the solar system. I had taken a stars and galaxies astronomy course several years ago. Some of the material was familiar, but there is always room for something new. With science, new things are discovered every day.

Hello, for my part I have greatly appreciated videos and exercises notably the LAB more interesting because more technical. Today in retirement I mainly took this course for my general culture. Another big thank you to Franck Timmes for his very lively and very imagined courses in ever changing settings .Michel

I really enjoyed the course besides being a bit disapointed that an answer to a question was sometimes in the next week content and that not all homework were only about the week content but also sometimes about prior content. And EDX did a big mistake when I had an issue on a lab resetting the wrong question after the week deadline, and after they told me to contact the instructors, nobody answered me on the forum. Other than that instructors were available and fast to answer even on sundays.

This course explores the origins of our solar system with amazing and profound topics, great discussion forums, wonderful feedback, fascinating and thought-provoking lectures, awesome assignments! Professor Timmes’ lectures ignited my curiosity and made astronomy fascinating to learn. The outdoor activities are a fun way to solidify lecture/reading material; the homeworks, labs, Content Mastery, and quizzes are engaging (with help from the instructors in the discussion forum). The design project was awesome! The edx platform is extremely easy to navigate, the proctor setup is convenient, and the homework/lab format with multiple attempts allowed is great! I am grateful to both Professor Timmes and the teaching team for their valuable insights and for making astronomy fun to learn. This course has been one of the most fascinating courses I have taken on astronomy!
