Course Description

This literature course explores how great writers refract their world and how their works are transformed when they intervene in our global cultural landscape today.

No national literature has ever grown up in isolation from the cultures around it; from the earliest periods, great works of literature have probed the tensions, conflicts, and connections among neighboring cultures and often more distant regions as well.

Focusing particularly on works of literature that take the experience of the wider world as their theme, this course will explore the varied artistic modes in which great writers have situated themselves in the world, helping us to understand the deep roots of today's intertwined global cultures.

Texts/authors considered in the course:

  • Goethe
  • The Epic of Gilgamesh
  • Homer, The Odyssey
  • The 1001 Nights
  • Voltaire, Candide
  • Orhan Pamuk, My Name is Red
  • Wole Soyinka, Death and the King's Horseman

Great course. I would emphatically disagree with the reviewer who did not like the format. This is my second EDX course, and this format (learned instructors discussing the content, supplemented with field trips and author interviews) is much more applicable to an online course than the standard format (video recording of a large class presentation.)

The content of the course consists in two proffesors chatting amicably about the books, while taking a tea, with complete disregard of the students.

An extremely well planned course along with great interactive teaching method followed in this MOOC. The lively conversations between Prof Damrosch and Prof Puchner along with the guest professors have made the course undoubtedly interesting.

Perhaps, one day, the course may be a bit longer, maintaining the same global attention structure in 'ars literaria', and thus favoring more world-class authors like others in Latin America and South America, Brazil and Europe - Virgilio, Dante Alighieri, Bocaccio, Ovidio, Machado de Assis, Guimarães Rosa, Lima Barreto, Garcia Marquez, Ernesto Sabato, Vargas Llosa etc ...

Great course. I read A LOT but many of the masterpieces were new to me. I liked the format of the dialogue between the two professors. It was a change from the old lecture/test format. Thanks for providing this course. Hope to see a Masterpieces 2!

One of the best MOOCs I have ever taken. In fact, I have enrolled again for the Spring course in order to have more time to read the material and get the certificate. Outstanding professors, incredibly motivating.

One of the best MOOCs I have ever taken. I just wished that the course would have lasted longer with more materials to discuss.

I am almost through the course waiting for the last lecture week. It was one of the best MOOCs I have ever taken giving eccellent insight into the most captivating pieces of world literature. The discussions and materials are extremely well presented. I only regret that I had to audit the course due to circumstances. I can recommend it to anyone interested in this subject.

Recomendo.
