Course Description

While the advances in genomics promise to usher a new era in medical practice and create a major paradigm shift in patient care, the ethical, legal and social impact of genomic medicine will be equally significant. The information and potential use of genomic discoveries are no longer issues left for scientists and medical professionals to handle, but have become ones for the public at large. Rarely a day passes without a genomics-related story reported in the media. By the end of this course, students will be able to better understand the field of genomics; be familiar with various online databases and resources; and understand and appreciate the medical, social, ethical, and legal issues associated with the availability of personal genomic information. Given the diversity of the topics and the specific expertise required to cover each, this is a unique cross-disciplinary course where faculty from different disciplines including gen... Interesting course that provides an introduction to the question of how to use genomic information for medical research, within families, and for world-wide medical issues. I would recommend this course if you have a beginning interest in genomics. It would probably be too basic for someone already in the field or an advanced genomics student.

This was a great opportunity to explore genomics to determine its efficacy on a rudimentary level. Already familiar with epigenetics, and the studies completed on that theory, there were many conflicting issues, leading to my withdrawing from this course. I can not endorse genomics as the best medical model available.

This course presented an amazing opportunity to get a sense of where we are with genomics and personalized medicine. I especially appreciated the chance to "visit" the lab and see what test results look like. The lab presentations correlated with the clinical presentations making this especially meaningful. Thank you all very much!

Fascinating course with a well-rounded coverage of a variety of aspects affecting Genomic Medicine. Wonderful to gain an understanding of the processes involved in genetic testing as well as how they are used in clinical practice. Particularly liked the discussions of ethical & legal issues, Big Data considerations and the private sector

Great course. I am a practicing physician and enjoyed the lectures and I especially enjoyed the roundtable discussions. It was relevant, informative and easy to follow. Dr. Haddad's enthusiasm for this topic is obvious. Memorable speakers are Dr. Clarke and Ms. Peshkin both very eloquent and informative. Highly recommend.

This is a FABULOUS course for anyone who wants to get a cross-disciplinary introduction to personalized medicine. The presenters are excellent and fairly easy to understand, even for non-medical students. The time required is not too intense; everything is covered in videos, with good lecture notes and transcripts. Some of the presentations get quite technical, but the overall points are really important and worthwhile even if a student doesn't understand everything. I leave the course filled with optimism for the future of medicine, but with a good dose of realism for the great amount of work it will take on multiple levels to realize the promise of personalized care.

I would make the course a little less U.S.-centred, especially the part about law.

This course was fascinating and very well-presented. I enjoyed Dr. Haddad's enthusiasm in the question and answer periods. The lectures were way better than what I remember from my own education (granted my education was in a completely different area, that of music) and I learned a lot from the impressive line-up of lecturers. In addition, I feel that the subject matter, that of genomics and the effect it will have on patient care, is of paramount importance and is the direction that medicine will take in the near future. It was a real treat to be able to take this course.

In 1974 Carl Sagan said about the future...The best way to avoid abuses is for the public to be scientifically literate, and understand the implications of research. If all aspects are discussed in schools, the press, and at the dinner table,we have learned how the word really is and for improving both it and us. He would have swooned over "Genomics"

Very interesting, relevant course on this exciting new area of science that has so much potential to reveal breakthrough treatments for serious medical conditions. Well presented, challenging at times because of the scientific detail (the final exam was the toughest of any of the Edx courses I have taken but was very fair). Early in the course it seemed a little promotional in nature but by the end it proved its case. The seemingly promotional nature was just an expression of the enthusiasm the prof had for the subject and by the end I shared his enthusiasm. Genomics WILL provide a key role in identifying new pathways for treatment for currently fatal conditions as well as assist greatly in targeting treatments based on an individuals genome. I'll say no more, take the course.
