Course Description

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the major social variables—social class, race, gender, poverty, income distribution, social networks/support, community cohesion, the work and neighborhood environment—that affect population health.

The course covers the theoretical underpinnings of each construct (e.g. "race" as a social category), and surveys the empirical research linking each to population health status. Methods are introduced to operationalize each construct for the purposes of empirical application in epidemiologic research.

Before your course starts, try the new edX Demo where you can explore the fun, interactive learning environment and virtual labs. Learn more.

Excellent course taught by excellent instructors. Information is clear and interesting. Professors are knowledgeable and fun to listen to. Many charts and graphs are used to assist in learning. I hope they can produce more courses from this team! Would absolutely recommend this course.

Ichiro Kawachi is an excellent lecturer, very clear and easy to follow. The course provides a great overview of epidemiological studies on human health. It teaches the basics of epidemiology and then selects a variety of interesting topics to provide the outcomes of studies. It gives you a taste of a vast topic and may leave you hungering for more.

This was a great course focusing on epidemiological evidence of health in western society. Dr. Kawachi is a great communicator and the course is well organized. The course load is well balanced and the grading system is fair and glitch free (unlike some other MOOC's I've taken recently). It is great at introducing basic principles of epidemiological science before applying them to some very interesting studies.

Here you can learn about epidemiology: the research results, the methods and the methods problems. The 'classes' are really good and very well explained.

For someone with little to no prior knowledge in public health, this course is extremely informative and interesting. I would recommend the course not only to people who have an interest in the field but for anyone who has an interest in the workings of our society.
