Course Description

Should we clone humans? What should we think of the coming genetic revolution? How much control should we have over how and when we die? When does medical treatment turn into medical enhancement — and should we care? Is rationing health care good, bad, necessary — or all of the above?

This course will explore fundamental moral issues that arise in medicine, health, and biotechnology. Get behind the headlines — and polarized debates — and join others who want to think deeply and openly about these problems. Some are as old as life itself: the vulnerability of illness, the fact of death. Some are new, brought on by a dizzying pace of technology that can unsettle our core ideas about human nature and our place in the world. And nearly all intersect with issues of racial and gender equality, as well as policies affecting the world’s most vulnerable populations.

Overall very good! Took it as an undergrad w/ no prior enjoyment and loved it. Some of the parts were more dull than others, but it's been the best MOOC I've taken so far.

This class was professionally filmed and managed, allowing me to focus on the course content. I found the course content thought-provoking and the discussion boards intellectually stimulating. I've taken other MOOCs in which this was not the case. Pedagogically this is a great course, but it is also a wonderful example of a MOOC with high production value.

The first 5 topics were very interesting because they posed ethical dilemmas which really made me think about the issues in new ways. The remaining topics really didn't pose questions but rather preached about the "ethical/right" answers without posing alternative ways of thinking about the issues. I learned a great deal reading the posts of students from other countries/cultures as well as from the instructors so this was another plus for this course. Thank you.

For sure one of the best courses, the topics was very actual and intellectual interesting. The Instructors were really good in general and some, IMHO, excellent. The provider let us enjoy and excellent course with a top tech platform, for sure one of the best. As a matter of fact I'm already doing another course with this Institution.

Dear Instructors: Tom Beauchamp, John Keown, Rebecca Kukla, Margaret Little, Madison Powers, Karen Stohr, Robert M. Veatch and everybody in the edX Team, who made it possible for me to join the course Introduction to Bioethics! It was great to get an understanding of modern views on bioethics issues in the magnificent professional presentation and also have the opportunity to improve my knowledge of English. I'm happy that I was able to get this inspiring experience, and now I understand how to improve my practice. I wish to thank you very much indeed for all you have done for me. I will try to keep the acquired experience to myself and share it with my colleagues and our students. Gratefully yours, Nataliya Volkova.

The interface and course plattform were fantastically designed to provide the student an easy approach to the content, which was exquisite, thought-provoking and pedagogic. I would have liked a GMO topic.

Loved the external platform. Loved the videos. Loved the interactive classrooms. I loved how thought provoking this course was. If I could change one thing, I wish the discussion had a little bit more discourse and involved people debating with each other rather than everybody just saying one thing. Also, I wish the final environmental module was a little bit more thought provoking.

Worth attending. Good instructors, and clear and well balanced content. I've enjoyed very much, and I'd like to delve into the matter. It would be very useful to have a good reference book or texts to follow the course and/or increase the knowledge about the topics.

One of the best courses I've ever had. I wish it had been longer, covering many topics which are also very nowadays, but even though this course worth it and have allowed to all of us to discover many issues which were unknown for the general people and to reflect. Very recommended.

I´m studying bio-sciences and unfortunately bioethics is not part of my regular curriculum. Therefore this course was a good addition to my studies. I never though that the answer to some questions, which sounded so easy at the beginning, are so complex and that there are so many points of view to look at them. However I have to admit, that I didn´t liked the last topic about climate change. For me it didn´t quite fit in with all the other topics and was to superficial. I personally would have preferred a unit about GMOs instate. But still, all in all it was a very good course, I recommend everyone to take it and hope there will be second course!

must congratulate demonstrate the ability to present the subject in a practical and easy way to get interest us. Obviously not delve into the issues raised, however basic knowledge transfers for all students. It facilitates the incorporation novice in the field and makes relexionar. But for me the most rewarding is to know the opinion in discussion forums of the very different classmates, with different backgrounds and training, I read carefully. It is the world united in a classroom. Congratulations on how easy it do the democratization of knowledge.

I thoroughly enjoyed the course. I especially like the topics on euthanasia and mercy-killing. It was interesting to note that countries like the Netherlands were receiving suicide tourists ie people going there to receive lethal injections. I also enjoyed the topic on climate change. It gave me much information on the issue.

Loved the class, wish it had been longer and covered more topics. There are so many decisions to be made and ethics should be studied by all corporation CEO's and staff. They surely lack that.

All very professional and well informed. There was only one instructor whose speaking voice was so low that I had to turn up the volume on my computer to hear the video talk. I was very pleased with the content of this Introduction to Bioethics for it dealt with recent content and updates, gave both sides of a controversy and the providers even gave a very comprehensive list of more resources. I was particularly pleased with the units on the Environment for I was lacking in sufficient uptodate info in that area. I would recommend this course for any person interested in Bioethics or just need a refresher on the basics

Not bad but other edX courses are given in more exciting way. Topics covered are interesting but the course has a strong focus on current, more obvious legal questions and definitions. Especially the person interested in more complex philosophical questions and in exploring new topics that might arise from technological advancement in terms of human- and bio-engineering will not necessarily be fully satisfied.

Excellent course! Great discussion leads and "some" challenging quiz questions. I was especially pleased with the caliber of instructors in this course. My mentors are tops in the field of bioethics and were very impressed that I was receiving instruction from these professors in a MOOC! Great format from The Kennedy Institute and EDX!

I really enjoyed this course, and the staff did an especially good job of framing discussions of "hot button" issues like abortion. Soap boxes were kept to a minimum. The only topic that didn't work well for me was the unit on disability, as I sensed there was something of an agenda on the part of the staff. But nevertheless, it was thought-proviking.

I've completed about 20 online courses, and this is in my top 5 favorites. The topics are timely and interesting, and the various perspectives are presented without endorsing one over the others. It challenged my assumptions and beliefs, and fed my open mind. Highly recommended.

I appreciated both the scope and depth of this bioethics course, from beginning of life to end of life and even global environmental ethics. I thought the instructors were excellent (especially Maggie, who is so articulate and thoughtful in her comments and responses to students.) I thought this course through the Kennedy School of Ethics provided a very balanced and measured approach to some thorny and complex ethical issues. I would highly recommend this course as an introductory exposure to the topic of bioethics.
