Course Description

Everyone involved in higher education has questions. Students want to know how they’re doing and which classes they should take. Faculty members want to understand their students’ backgrounds and to learn whether their teaching techniques are effective. Staff members want to be sure the advice they provide is appropriate and find out whether college requirements accomplish their goals. Administrators want to explore how all of their students and faculty are doing and to anticipate emerging changes. The public wants to know what happens in college and why.

Everyone has questions. We have the chance to help them find answers.

Practical Learning Analytics has a specific goal: to help us collectively ponder learning analytics in a concrete way. To keep it practical, we will focus on using traditional student record data, the kinds of data every campus already has. To make it interesting, we will address questions raised by an array...

Practical Learning Analytics has a specific goal: to help us collectively ponder learning analytics in a concrete way. To keep it practical, we will focus on using traditional student record data, the kinds of data every campus already has. To make it interesting, we will address questions raised by an array of different stakeholders, including campus leaders, faculty, staff, and especially students. To provide analytic teeth, each analysis we discuss will be supported by both realistic data and sample code.

This is an excellent course, however I think of it as more than just an introductory course. The content of this course is so rich I plan to come back several times: 1. First to help guide me for my individual research. I am trying to teach myself Learning Analytics and have read a bit and taken other MOOCs. With the background I have gotten from this course, I feel more comfortable reading scientific literature. I have first got to finish my doctorate though and this course has already encouraged me to do that as well as continuing the Stats I do in my class. 2. I would also like to return with a group of colleagues so we can do research projects at my school. With my prior knowledge and with the multilayered and rich content of this course, I just might be able to convince them do a group project. I'll be back! Please don't archive this course. Keep it up, open and available.

Very strange and very poor course. Basically, the whole course is just explaining the idea, that we have to collect and analyze learning data to build better education. No theoretical background, no new evidence and research. Some practical tools about using R language is the most useful part of the course, but there are a lot of courses about R itself in the Internet. So value of this material is really really questionable to me.
