Course Description

Protein is found in virtually every part of your body. At least 10,000 different proteins make you what you are and keep you that way.

In this biology course you will learn how proteins drive almost all living processes.

Proteins manufactured by cells perform a broad range of essential functions — the molecular workforce of living organisms.

You will learn how proteins are the cellular manifestation of genetic information. They are assembled into a polymeric structure from monomers derived in part from components in our diet. Proteins catalyze metabolic reactions, replicate DNA, respond to stimuli, provide movement, and much more. Using video lectures, articles, case studies, and molecular models, we will explore how proteins are constructed, how they fold into 3-dimensional shapes, the kinds of bonds that hold these folded structures together, and the immense range of roles that proteins assume ‑ from structural proteins fo...

Purification and characterization are essential to understand protein structure and function, and we will identify a variety of methods to uncover how these tiny machines drive almost all living processes.

The information and knowledge provided through the lectures and supplementary materials gave me much needed insight into the basics of proteins. Although I do feel that more advanced knowledge should be provided either through this course or a subsequent course, I think this is a great course to understand how proteins play a huge role in learning biology.

This lecture allowed me to meet a plenty of information about proteins. As I wanted know about what the hack is the protein, and how i know the presence, structure and its function, I'm very delightful that I acquired my desired knowledge. I'm very thankful for providing such instructions at free cost.

Useful introduction on methods of protein analysis, but not very in depth. Would benefit from a dedicated section on molecular probes.

This is a well taught and highly informative class. The teachers do an excellent job of explaining the complex material. The visuals are clear and to the point. They are very useful for understanding the material. I would recommend it to anyone interested in learning about cell biology, or biology in general.

I found this course easy to follow, with additional information that enhanced my learning experience and knowledge. It was my first time learning about these things and i found almost everything easy to follow. I did not like the video content as i found it harder to follow but i did look up my own sources for the information being provided in these. Thank you. i thoroughly enjoyed learning with this course.

Good content, nice slides, but the instructor was very unclear and unsure, lots of back tracking, mistakes, unprofessional. It appears she knows the content well but is notnsuitable for presenting this information. Sadly i would not take another course by this instructor.

I really love this course, I find it well instructed and at a reasonably high level. I'm a Nutritionist with a great love to biochemistry and biology, so all of these topics are my second nature. I want to say a big thank you to EDX, the university offering the course and offcourse the wonderful teachers that give its great spirit!

More introductory than intermediate level. There is not a lot to learn, but the quality of the content is good. One of the best activity proposed in this course is the reading of historical scientific papers: it's very nice to read about topics like, for example, the discovery of alpha helixes and beta sheets with the eyes of the scientists who introduced them, exploring not only the conclusions of their works, but methods too.
