Course Description

Since the introduction of mass production, the concept of “quality” has evolved from simple assembly line inspections to a broad approach to production and management involving an entire corporation. Quality has become a critical driver for long-term success through continuous process improvement and customer satisfaction. Quality Management today concerns the entire value chain, encompassing multi-tiered supplier networks and customer service and returns.

This business and management course balances the quantitative elements of quality engineering with a managerial approach to using quality in an organization to effect change. We cover the statistical basics needed for a Six-Sigma Green Belt certification, following the well-known process-improvement cycle: Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control.

The most important quality methods and techniques are taught, including sampling, statistical process control, process capability, regression analysis, and design of experiments. Quality management is examined, from the viewpoint of quality incorporated into product design, measuring and controlling quality in production and improving quality, using interactive, guided projects and case studies. The course closes with the presentation of a full Six-Sigma project.

The contents of this course are essentially the same as those of the corresponding TUM class (Quality Engineering and Management) and will enable you to immediately understand and apply quality concepts in your work and research.

WHY TAKE THIS COURSE?

  • Quality issues appear everywhere and affect the entire organisation.
  • You'll quickly master quality concepts so that you can apply quality tools and drive quality programs within your own organisation.
  • You'll gain the fundamentals for a Six-Sigma Green Belt in a manageable and positive learning environment, along with the chance to discuss with staff and fellow learners worldwide.

On the eve of the closure of the course, I express my heartiest gratitude and thankfulness to all team members who structured this wonderful course. This is not one of the best course but THE BEST course in the world amongst all MOOCs on Six Sigma. Specially my gratitude to Dr. Holly for her wonderful presentation & prompt response during interactions. I have completed the same course from ALISON and Open Learning also but absolutely no comparison of these courses with this edX course. The course contents, presentations, videos, handouts and case studies were excellent. Even MINITAB which is considered impossible to understand without class room was explained in very easy to understand method. The course is must for all professionals involved in Quality functions. My heartiest thanks and gratitude, S.P.Singh Dehradun- India

The Course is handy and helpful. If there is a person in the world who appreciates the course 100%, I am the first one to appreciate though I have not completed it. All material is excellent. The people who say its to easy and straight forward do not no what they are saying. People want to see things complicated for them to take it as worth while but when something is made easy it makes even easy to understand and that's what the lecturers have done. I am definitely retaking this course. I am teaching Quality Assurance in Zambia.

I think this course is a great starting point for anyone who aim at working in the quality management field. The pace of the course is medium and the different deadlines are set off quite far away from when the problems are available which I appreciate a lot since it gives you the time needed even if you have a life to manage at the same time. TUM have done a great work to provide examples, interactive graphics and many different case studies. I feel I could start a study myself after having finished this course. Well done, all of you!

A brilliant course - thoroughly recommended. An interesting subject, well presented with excellent lectures and handouts. Right from the start, it was apparent that Six Sigma overlapped my existing role and that applying it offered significant benefits. Since completing the course, I've been trying to "sell" this to my colleagues who have asked me to prepare a presentation on what I've learnt. If you want to know more about Six Sigma, I would definitely recommend this course.

The course was perfect for me. I worked my way into Quality after starting my career in chemistry. I had many on the job in-house training, training at conferences and software to help do my work in quality. This course gave me the insight on how the quality concepts work. Professor Holly Ott is awesome. Professor Grunow is great also.

Very heavy on statistical analysis of Quality rather than applications of Engineering and Management. The statistical tools are well taught. The examples and test cases reinforce the teaching well. Could benefit from some more realistic examples, and teaching tools for analysis rather than hand calculating everything.

The course content is very useful for anyone interested or is involved in quality control. The statistics and probability math is very practical and the DMAIC concept is a great structured process for quality control. I think there are a few downsides or problem areas, however. The course was too easy and probably a bit too short (if it's too easy, I'm probably not learning). The lectures were very informative, though the cookie example for the DMAIC/six-sigma real-life example was too dry. I would have liked to see more homework and practice problems. Also, most of the problems were straightforward and simple, so I didn't think it was challenging enough.

This is a well crafted course, especially since it's first TUM's offering. There is not much about management but lot of statistical tools used in quality engineering are covered. Professor Holly Ott does a really good job at making subject clear and easy to understand, following with good practice examples. All in all, a good practical course in quality engineering.
