Course Description

Quantum Mechanics for Everyone is a four-week long MOOC that teaches the basic ideas of quantum mechanics with a method that requires no complicated math beyond taking square roots (and you can use a calculator for that). Quantum theory is taught without “dumbing down” any of the material, giving you the same version experts use in current research. We will cover the quantum mystery of the two-slit experiment and advanced topics that include how to see something without shining light on it (quantum seeing in the dark) and bunching effects of photons (Hong-Ou-Mandel effect).

To get a flavor for the course and see if it is right for you, watch "Let's get small", which shows you how poorly you were taught what an atom looks like, and "The fallacy of physics phobia."

Please note: the four sections of this course will be released on a weekly basis from April 18, 2017 to May 9, 2017, when all the course material will be availab...

This is together a simple and very powerful course. It gives you the opportunity to learn a pioneer work in quantum mechanics without a lot of effort. Furthermore the assistance from the discussion forum by the professor was constantly, even in holidays. I strongly recomend this course because it gives you a very good idea about how a quantum system work. Finally I would like to thank professor and all the staff for that beautiful result in teaching of quantum mechanics.

I completed this course number of months ago and found it was very interesting. The course tries to explain quantum mechanics without a lot of math, specifically without calculus. The professor does this explanation using clever models and short apps with which the students can interact. It is a very effective method and reduces the mystery of quantum mechanics. No one can explain quantum mechanics in a way that humans can truly understand it but this course does does an exceptional job of providing more intuition into quantum mechanics, especially for those without calculus - thus, it's for everyone.

Fabulous course! I'm a professional in an unrelated field, but for years I've wanted to learn more about quantum mechanics. In the past, the materials I've found have been either too superficial, or I didn't have the math background to follow them. This course turned that around! Professor Freericks has designed a course that is both challenging and accessible -- with work! I came away with a better understanding of the quantum world, and a desire to take more of his courses.

The course is excellent. I was astonished, informed, and enlightened. The only surprise was that the level of difficulty of the quizzes varied widely from nearly-trivial to PhD-level.

This is the first course I will consider to acquire a certificate! From a finance professional to an everyday life scientist, the transition takes three months and I am only at half-point of all course materials. A certificate may help show my friends a flip is possible!

I thoroughly enjoyed "Quantum Mechanics for Everyone". This must be the best introductory course to any advanced physics topic that I have taken or seen. Thank you to Professor Freericks and the team for all the time and effort that obviously went into creating this course, with its videos and interactive tutorials/simulations. Even the final exam was fun - helping to consolidate many of the ideas taught in the course. Anyone interested in quantum mechanics should try this course, and as long as you have taken maths up to high school level you should be fine with the small amount of maths in the course.

The course is wonderful. The course requires a certain willpower to continue after starting but the course content is so wonderfully designed that it treats the exact next thoughts that occur naturally after reading or doing an experiment. The simulations are also wonderfully designed. And Prof. Freericks has given simple explanation without dumbing anything down. That is not so easy to do but he has done exactly that. I am very grateful to him for creating this awesome course. When I understood something I literally jumped up and down with excitement.

I would recommend this course to any aspiring physicist or interested person. It truly was an incredibly beneficial experience. As a Turkish high school student willing to be a physicist, this course masterfully thought the foundation of my future studies. It is very apparent from every aspect of the course that a lot of hard work was invested in its creation. From simulations to lectures, questions to further readings every material is though-provoking, exciting, and uniquely presented. This course should be obligatory education in high school and any support in helping create similar courses in the future is extremely well-deserved. I thank all who have contributed to this project.

An excellent course that enables people with minimal to no knowledge at the area to understand so much about something so fundamental. The team managed to simplify complex subject without losing critical details that are required for proper understanding. I am looking forward for more courses like that!

Perfect course, thank you. It has a good balance of thinking and counting so it's not just a philosophical talking about ideas but you have to study and think a bit so you really feel you understand something and not taking every information for granted. Looking forward for additional courses from prof. Freericks and his team.

The course is very good in every aspect. Students just need to be patient as the course explains everything in great details through the videos, reading notes, questions and the computer based tutorials. The computer based tutorials are excellent as it shows complicated concepts visually and in a simulation manner through a step by step approach. I highly recommend this excellent course for everyone who is interested in this subject. I look forward to more in-depth courses from the professor and the development team. Thank you very much.

Wow! What an amazing class, highly recommend for anyone interested in learning about quantum mechanics. I had never taken a physics course prior to this. The class is well-designed, great for visual learners (lots of interactive tutorials and videos), and each module builds on the last one, so that you're making connections between different concepts over time. How I see and understand the world has fundamentally changed because of this class. I haven't had this kind of perspective shift in such a compressed amount of time since, maybe, college? Thank you to Prof. Freericks & team!

Absolutely fantastic and professionally designed course. It kept me excited from the very beginning till the last video. I was a bit skeptical about quantum mechanics being for everyone but now I have no doubts - yes it is! Even though I haven't completed written assignments (sorry about that, I hate writing), I feel comfortable with all of the discussed concepts. The simulations were amazing and gave me a deep understanding of the involved phenomena. The quality of the course is outstanding and one can easily feel a huge amount of effort and dedication professor Freericks and his team put into the course and its preparations. Thank you for that, it was a great pleasure to participate! I would be happy to join a sequel to the course and I hope that it will be possible to prepare one in the future.

This is an enjoyable and informative introduction to quantum mechanics. I liked that the materials were a mix of video lectures, simulations and text. The practice questions were extremely useful in clarifying understanding and the ability to make more than one attempt to get the correct answer was extremely useful while learning. Clearly a large effort went into making this course: not just the content but the way in which it is presented. I hope that additional funding is given to this group to produce more courses like this one.

An amazing and wonderful course. I'm 56 y.o. and my job is in a completely different sector, but I really could follow this class and I could understand quantum mechanics much more. I really appreciate the strategy to go step by step for achieving complex concepts, and the great efforts of the professor and his staff to make easier to understand this sometimes astonishing subject. Thank to all of them.

This is a great course for those who want to understand the workings of quantum mechanics but don't have the background in math required in all other courses, or for those who want to jump straight to the complicated results and maybe learn the fine workings later. I would have liked the explanation and math to have gone a little bit deeper but that is what the other traditional courses are for. I hope this goes on to become a series and I would certainly recommend this for anyone who has interest in QM and is usually put of by the math.

Simply one of the best course around of its type. Here there is something for everyone: the beginner with limited (but not zero) math knowledge is the type of student this course is oriented at, but also people who like me have studied the matter on more technical course can learn a lot. In fact, I can read here very positive reviews made by fellow students who I've met in said more advanced course. Here, you will have the chance to focus on very important, defining experiments on the subject, experiments which I've never seen treated with this detail. And the professor is very good: you'll find lots of "pop" references to attract your attention, 3D interactive simulations, real experiment videos, and simple explanations (but still quantitative, math notions, not divulgative easy stuff). And the commitment of the teacher to answer questions is great! All in all, highly recommended! The only problem is that there is not an easy way to...
