Course Description

This course will help you envision how Indigenous histories, perspectives, worldviews, and approaches to learning can be made part of the work we do in classrooms, organizations, communities, and our everyday experiences in ways that are thoughtful and respectful. In this course, reconciliation emphasizes changing institutional structures, practices, and policies, as well as personal and professional ideologies to create environments that are committed to strengthening our relationships with Indigenous peoples.

For educators, this means responding to educational reforms that prioritize improved educational outcomes for Indigenous learners. In addition, educators must support all learners to develop their knowledge and understanding of Indigenous people’s worldviews and cultures as a basis for creating equitable and inclusive learning spaces. I was very impressed with the "Reconciliation through Indigenous Education," course. Although I am retired, the course was thoroughly informative. This is a much needed multicultural course for educators working with indigenous students.

This was an amazing course which I approached eagerly but with trepidation as I don't have much prior knowledge in the subject area. I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of information available for deeper exploration and the approachable way the MOOC was set up. It is especially appropriate for K-12 teachers and it would great if more material for adult learners could be added (I am an ESL instructor of adult learners) but the material and resources could be adapted without much challenges.

This was my first indigenous studies course I have taken since the early 1990s. It was excellent, the videos were great as I could sit and listen and replay what I wanted to hear again. The people who shared were awesome, sincere and honest, very professionally delivered. I am a retired teacher, but I will take more of these courses. Where indigenous education was in the 1990s compared to now, gives me great hope that education will be fully put back in the hands of their leaders and parents.

I feel that this class was comparable to the Literacy class a number of years ago. It is probably one of the top 3 in all my undergraduate years. However, this is a class that is more like 10 hours per week. The resources and the help they gave me in my work were excellent.

I thought this course was excellent....so much information and so thought provoking. Unfortunately I was not able to participate as fully as I would have liked due to unforeseen circumstances, so I ended up just auditing the course and not completing the assignments. Still I learned so much and I am so grateful for the opportunity to take this course. thank you....Randine Arnesen

Usually I do not like to take online courses but this one was so refreshingly straightforward. The information and planning was really taken into consideration in the way it was presented and the professors made the learning very personal in the way most things were presented through video as opposed to just text. I would definitely take this course again, very enlightening subject.

I loved all the videos and resources. I'm not a huge fan of online learning and prefer face to face. However, what an amazing way to reach thousands of learners across the globe! I learned so much and that is the most important thing!

I recommend this course for anyone who works in a teaching and learning context. I teach at the university level and although not the intended audience (K-12 educators) I found everything to be relevant to my own practice. The videos are excellent, from the introductions with Jan Hare to the one on one interviews with editors, to the videos of classroom cases. I also enjoyed that the assignments and posts encouraged reflection and dialogue.

What a gift this course has been - - though the voices of Elders and Knowledge Keepers, by connecting us with each other and with materials to support and provoke our thinking. I am so glad that I enrolled. Thanks you so much Jan Hare and Sara Davidson (Melanie, Lael, Nikki & Amber) I thought that I had paid for the certificate - and your found I was listed as an auditor. I will guess that is just being new to EDx.

I loved the course! It was really enriching. It made me reflect a lot about my ideas and actions, not only as a teacher, also as a human being. Now my understanding of the topic is deeper and it has already improved some of my practices. I'm so grateful for that!

The wealth of educational resources and dialog from the indigenous community makes this course very enriching. It also validates contemporary struggles for reconciliation, particularly the need for it in education.

This course was absolutely great. I learned so much over a couple of weeks. This course have improved my knowledge and understanding of Indigenous struggles and history and I feel better equipped as an educator to support Indigenous students in school. I would definitely take a step 2 of this course if it was offered.

This was an excellent course. I loved that I could dip in to a 10 minute video when I was short on time, or linger over a website resource when I had more time. I had many personal insights arise over the six weeks. I was also able to apply my learning directly to my work place. And as some of my colleagues were taking the course at the same time, we had many fruitful discussions. Highly recommend this course.

As a senior and fully retired this course was a very engaging, interesting and challenging course. It requires a bit of time and effort each week with the topics but the amount of learning and knowledge acquire is worth it! The instructors provides learning resources such as videos, readings, quizzes and expert advice from many elders and scholars. I recommend this course to all who wants to learn about reconciliation, to those who want to advance their knowledge in the field or for those who want to begin learning about indigenous education! An excellent course. Very informative and provocative for someone new to the topic. Content well-organized, impactful presentation of material in videos. Gives a grounding in the significance of what is being taught, and lots of practical suggestions for educators to apply what they learned. Provides a wealth of further resources to explore as well.
