Course Description

Did you know that you can track some sharks’ movements on Twitter? Or that the scales on their skin have influenced the way humans design boats, planes, and even swim suits? Or that sharks have more senses than humans?

In this biology course, you will learn how scientists study sharks. You will join researchers on location in labs, aquariums, and oceans across the globe to learn about the biodiversity, biology, and conservation of sharks, rays, and chimaeras.

In this activity‑rich course, you’ll track movements of a wild shark, observe shark habitats and behavior, and dig deep into the fossil record. You will also examine topics in the functional anatomy, sensory biology, reproduction, behavior, and ecology of many of the 1,200 living species.

This is an exciting time to be a shark biologist. An explosion of new research methods and technologies are leading to a surprising world of discovery. We’ll introduce new, as well as ...

This is an exciting time to be a shark biologist. An explosion of new research methods and technologies are leading to a surprising world of discovery. We’ll introduce new, as well as traditional techniques, for classifying sharks, understanding behavior, and unraveling the mysteries of shark evolution. You’ll be invited to explore global shark populations and consider shark-human interactions and their impacts on history and culture.

You’ll be rewarded by your ability to see virtually any animal with new eyes. Practice thinking like a biologist while honing critical skills that can lead to broader observations about the ongoing history of life on Earth.

This was a really interesting in depth course. The last study I did of this sort was decades ago - basic Biology. I found it easy to follow and loved the videos and additional links to various things. Following a Shark was great and I shall continue to do this! The course was a good level - not too difficult but absorbing enough to make me want to continue. I completed the course in the time prescribed. I really liked the additional information and art from Ray Troll. Great artist and I have sent for some of his books! I am based in the UK but felt the course was still relevant. Brilliant. Thank you.

I knew nothing about the subject and really wanted to find out more, this course made my dreams come true! I was scared I would have some difficulties being new to the subject, but the flow and materials are appropriate to all. I found out which shark spheres interest me more and I can't wait to detail my knowledge. Thank you so much for putting this course together, it has been mind opening.

Phenomenal course! I came in with a lot of superficial familiarity with sharks as an aquarium educator, but this course offers a lot of in depth information about their biology, ecological role, evolution, and conservation. I really enjoyed taking this course and I am grateful for all the new information that I can use to teach other about the importance of sharks!

I had the good fortune to enrol last year and although I was very apprehensive in my personal ability-in my autumnal years- I found the course challenging ,highly motivating in wanting to learn more and so because of this-I romped forwards. They say when you're totally immersed in a topic that you don't notice how much content you are amassing and this was the case for me. My confidence in tackling new learning now has greater meaning through this content and and is greatly improved as a result.I cannot stress enough how this course has helped me personally move forwards and instilled vigour and appetite to my continued desire in learning. I'm grateful for the faculties and team players for helping me onto a new path of wonder and inquisitivity and thank you all so much -had there been no portal designed such as this,my personal improvement would've continued to be stagnated. I took this course last summer (2016) and it was one of the BEST courses I've taken in awhile from both my current institution AND online courses. It was extremely educational, the videos are well put together, and the flow of the course is designed very well. You get to track a shark throughout the course and you learn so much about the diversity of the wonderful creatures.

I took this course last year when it was first offered and it is an amazing class. I would highly recommend it for those who have no experience to those who are very experienced. There is something for everyone! I found the videos, lectures, and professors to be interesting and challenging. This is a fun class and the students bond during discussions and in a Facebook group. You also get to track a shark online all class which is really cool. Five stars!
