This short course teaches students and industry professionals how to design integrated optical devices and circuits, using a hands-on approach with commercial tools. We will fabricate your designs using a state-of-the-art ($5M) silicon photonic rapid-prototyping 100 keV electron-beam lithography facility. We will measure your designs using an automated optical probe station and provide you the data. You will then analyze your experimental data.

The focus of this course is a design project, guided by lectures, tutorials and activities. As a first-time designer, you will design an interferometer, which is a widely used device in many applications such as communications (modulation, switching) and sensing. Specifically, it is Mach-Zehnder Interferometer, consisting of fibre grating couplers, two splitters, and optical waveguides. For advanced designers, this course is an opportunity to design many other devices, such as directional couplers, ring, racetrack and disk resonators, Bragg gratings including grating assisted contra-directional couplers, photonic crystals, multi-mode interference (MMI) couplers, polarization diversity components, mode-division multiplexing (MDM) components and circuits, novel waveguides such as sub-wavelength grating (SWG) and metamaterial waveguides, slot waveguides, etc.

Commercial software tool licenses are provided in this course (Lumerical Solutions, Mentor Graphics, and MATLAB). Open-source alternatives are provided. Mentor Graphics tools are accessed remotely via a cloud service; the others can be run on your own computer.

You will earn a professional certificate from the University of British Columbia and edX upon successful completion of this course. Certificates can be uploaded directly to your LinkedIn profile.

Pretty good class, not too hard but it takes alot of time and effort to keep up with the material. Familiarity in Lumerical Mode and Interconnect is a bonus but not required

Excellent course, the course is well prepared. All provided scripts and commercial programs are very useful. Prof. Dr. Lukas Chrostowski is really an excellent instructor; he is an expert, articulate, detailed, and organized. This was one of the best courses I have ever taken.

Dr. Chrostowski has pulled together an amazing amount of material, condensed it in a very palatable form, while some how not diluting the subject in the process. This is an intense course that will reward the student upon completion with a complete understanding of the design, simulation, layout, manufacturing, testing, and validation of silicon photonic devices. The course has theory balanced with practice that is completely grounded in reality. You will make your own devices in this class. Not just a simulation course, or a math course, you will fabricate a real device and compare its performance to your predicted theory. This is a very unique opportunity that without access to a large foundry or specialized equipment you would never be able to do. Dr. Chrostowski is articulate, detailed, organized, and approachable. I have taken several online courses and this is by far the most dynamic and all encompassing course I have taken... This course is really helpful for beginners in silicon photonics. Started from zero and now can independently finish a design. In the end of the course, felt a little difficult to catch up though. Mostly importantly, a patient, enthusiastic and encouraging instructor Prof. Lukas is. Thank you!

Easy to handle for the beginners. A good experience for those who have never tried a full design - fabrication - test cycle. Can also be really energy-consuming even for those experienced learners, since how long it will take really depends on how deep you want to go. There are enough resources for you to explore, and Lukas is even adding more!

Excellent. Highly recommended. Provides a snapshot of the state of the silicon photonics technology, tools, design techniques. The EBeam chip that gets fabricated and analyzed is fantastic to bring it all home,

This Silicon Photonics course provides an accelerated introduction to the design and fabrication process of Mach-Zender Interferometer. It requires persistence and an interest in the subject matter! Professor Lukas Chrostowski does an excellent job of engaging his students, providing constructive feedback and answering questions. I highly recommend taking this course to any students interested in learning more about Silicon Photonics.

This course is very well designed to provide a basic and fundamental knowledge on silicon photonics. I started this course with an absolute zero experience on silicon photonics, but now I almost know what is what and I think I have gained enough confident to pursue this field. Prof. Chrostowski is an awesome teacher, he knows what to teach and how.

This was a truly excellent class. I learned a great deal and the instructiors were very responsive on the discussion forums. The fact that your design is actually manufactured makes real the work you do in a very immediate manner. The subject is also fascinating. Highly recommended.

This was one of the best courses I have ever taken (online or traditional). Prof. Chrostowski and his team did an incredible job of preparing the material. The video lectures were succinct and informative. The commercial tools that were provided (Lumerical, Mentor Graphics, etc.) were key in making this course particularly useful to professionals. The support that he provided through the discussion forum was well done. Overall, it was a wonderful learning experience.

This course, to agree wholeheartedly with eighty percent of the reviews before mine, '...is absolutely cool... I just wish I had more time to dedicate to all available extras. The instructor was excellent... It was really incredible... Thank you to all that were involved. The course shows the whole process, from design to manufacture... the level of detail in course content as well as very timely feedback ensure that you don't get stuck... Prof. Chrostowski and his team did an incredible job of preparing the material... Highly recommended.' Indeed, '...Prof. Chrostowski is an awesome teacher...' Please allow me to offer a difference of opinion to the earlier suggestion that, '...the course is not recommended for somebody who does not have an engineering background...' I loved it! I didn't '...devote a few hours a day for quiet study every day...' yet I am still not disappointed... what a brilliant course!

I was a little hesitant about taking this course because I already had some experience in silicon photonics. I am glad that I decided to take it. It was an amazing learning experience, and I think the course would be very useful for a wide range of people including graduate students and working professionals. I wish I could have known prof. Lukas earlier to learn from him and his course. I am currently taking the course at eDX.org. The course is extremely helpful for me. If somebody would like to know essential things about Silicon Photonics, this course is a must. I just summarized what I remembered here and hope it is helpful for you. The course shows the whole process, from design to manufacture, of a passive silicon photonic device called Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The process starts from analyzing/simulating fundamental components such as silicon waveguide, Ybranch, and grating coupler with Matlab, Lumerical (MODE, INTERCONNECT). And then, you have chance to learn about how to layout your design using Klayout or Mentor Graphic and fabrication. You also have chance to learn about many variations which affect your final product such as resolution of the EBeam machine, processing time vs. precision, waveguide roughness .. Final... I wish I could have known prof. Lukas earlier to learn from him and his course. I am currently taking the course at eDX.org. The course is extremely helpful for me. The course is designed to make silicon photonics design, fabrication and data analysis accessible to everyone with a wide range of experience, from the novice, to the professional, everyone learns loads out of this course. I particularly appreciated; 1. the high quality of the material and resources, especially the video lectures which were short and effective. The notes proved useful especially when writing up the report, or looking up further information. The educational tools such as the design, layout and data analysis tools were readily made available, and the techniques used made full use of these tools. 2. The team; the instructor, Dr. Lukas Chrostowski, an expert in his field, gives each student his time and full attention, making sure each student gets everything possible out of this course. His team were exceptional, and made the course a huge success. 3. Interaction; From discussion boards to Live Q... Excellent! This six week course that starts and keeps a high pace, as there is so much to play around with, from making your own photonic designs, to checking how they've performed after making them. The course is brings across a lot of the passion the staff and volunteers have for the subject area of silicon photonics, and that rubs off on all the students and gets everyone really excited for the area. edX hosted the course magnificently, no hiccups, no down times, everything ran smoothly, and there were many ways to interact on the course via the edX interface, from discussion boards, to streaming videos, to live google hang out teleconference calls, to online data analysis, simply great. This course has made continuous professional development and high level on going education accessible to everyone. Thank you to all that were involved.

The course offers excellent opportunity to dive into photonics design to someone without prior experience or knowledge in it. It was really incredible: I started it having no clue what photonics design is and finished by analyzing data measured on a silicon chip I have designed. All the lectures were perfectly prepared and organized and lecturer was really passionate in the subject. Take care: the course is tough. I have professional experience in semiconductor design (processors and communications) and in software, still it required a lot of effort not to miss the deadlines for homework exercises, layout, report etc.

I work in a closely related field but haven't had prior experience with photonics. I found this class engaging and very relevant. This class has a bit of social mission - it offers introduction to modern photonics field and industry tools, but it also aims to educate the students in inexpensive/free manufacturing tools that make prototyping of photonics circuits widely available even to industry outsiders. The community and class staff were very responsive and willing to work to meet every student at their level. Tons of "optional" material and Q&A sessions with experts in the field to learn from -I just wish I had more time to dedicate to all available extras.

I have taken several on-line university courses, but this is the best one. The biggest highlight of this course is the opportunity to fabricate your own optical photonic components on the real silicon wafer. Even if it's the on-site course, the school rarely offers such a great opportunity. You also will have an opportunity to experience the industry leading EDA tools. It is not 100 % free for the chip fabrication fee, but the free course is not always the best. Because of the cost, many talented individuals gather as a student, and are having a very active and very valuable discussion on the discussion board. Everybody has a very strong passion for the study, and the instructor also has a very strong passion to extend this type of educational opportunity and to impact to the society. In reality, it starts impacting to the world. The content of the course is quite a challenge, and as a result, the course is not reco... I'm about to complete the course. I'm a professional VLSI circuit design engineer focusing on the microprocessor design. Photonics is totally the new area for me, and the class turned out to be very valuable to extending my knowledge from silicon electronics to photonics, which is one of the most promising areas for the silicon VLSI technology. I highly recommend this course to somebody who has a similar background to myself.

This is my first course on silicon photonics and I find the lecture is absolutely cool. The learning process is amazingly interactive despite it is an online course. More importantly, as a beginner, I appreciate that the course is designed for providing a bigger picture of the field rather than being dominated by excessive details. If you are a new comer like me, this course certainly does a well job to help you to reach further in this field.

Course content was excellent and required only a basic understanding of photonics in order to participate fully. The course moves quite fast, but the level of detail in course content as well as very timely feedback ensure that you don't get stuck or waste time spinning your wheels. Overall the course was of excellent quality and fully worth the money spent.

This is perhaps one of the best courses I have taken, online or on-site. It has been many years since I studied anything remotely associated with the subject of this course, so I was understandably apprehensive. However, within a couple of weeks I was thoroughly enjoying the virtual school experience. The organisation of weekly release of video tutorial, support media and peripheral industry/academic news bulletins is excellent. The course instructor is a first class educator, if you are a working professional, you can expect a rigorous training program delivered with a rare and infectious passion. A lively discussion forum monitored by the instructor and a very capable research assistant helps you to understand common issues, assimilate new perspectives on matters, and iron out any homework frustrations. The weekly Q&A video feed vies for the jewel in the crown of this course, with guest speakers from the upper echelons of industry... This is perhaps one of the best courses I have taken, online or on-site.
