Course Description

In the third edition of Solar Energy, you will learn to design a complete photovoltaic system. This course introduces the technology that converts solar energy into electricity, heat and solar fuels with a main focus on electricity generation. Photovoltaic (PV) devices are presented as advanced semiconductor devices that deliver electricity directly from sunlight. The emphasis is on understanding the working principle of a solar cell, fabrication of solar cells, PV module construction and the design of a PV system. You will gain a greater understanding of the principles of the photovoltaic conversion— the conversion of light into electricity. This course explores the advantages, limitations and challenges of different solar cell technologies, such as crystalline silicon solar cell technology, thin film solar cell technologies and the latest novel solar cell concepts as studied on lab-scale. We will discuss the specification...

We will discuss the specifications of solar modules and demonstrate how to design a complete solar system for any particular application.

Education Method

The class will consist of a collection of eight to twelve minute lecture videos, exercises, assignments and exams. Specified assignments and the three exams will determine the final grade. The new textbook on “Solar Energy, basics, technology and systems” from the Delft University of Technology will be available for the students on-line and free of charge. Your course staff will encourage and challenge you to learn from, and interact with, your fellow students by helping each other and sharing ideas and best practices, in the course forum. We were happy to see the incredible number of interesting student videos on solar energy systems from all over the world in the previous edition of this course.

Professor Smets was the first ever recipient of the edX Prize for Exceptional Contributions to Online Teaching and Learning. His previous online courses attracted over 150,000 students worldwide, who were inspired to take their first steps in the transition to renewable energy.

The subject will create a revolution as it is the requirement of the time. I found this course and specially Prof. Arno very inspiring. He has inspired me to work ahead in PV cells and currently I am working on Plasmonics and nanostructures for efficiency enhancement of solar cells. I hope one day solar cells will replace the fossil fuels completely.

I am a mechanical engineer who has had some course work in solar energy many years ago in college so I was very interested in see how far solar panels have progressed from being pretty much a non-issue 30 years ago. This course is very theoretical and does not spend a lot of time on the practical aspects of solar design through you will deal with some of the cost basis and decision making when considering a design. The course spends a lot of time on the theoretical concepts of designing the cells themselves. I found the material instructive and approachable, but again, this is probably not the course for someone interested in the practical applications of solar design. The material is relatively difficult and the estimated effort of 8 house per week is very low. Assume that this will be double in order to obtain a firm grasp of the material.

Every day in Nigeria, we faced with the harsh impact of global warming, this programme is quite timely inorder to properly harness the full blown economic potentials it provides for us even as electricity is almost at it's zero level.

Hi, I ma from Liberia. In my country we are blessed with more than six months if sunshine but more than 90% of the population has no access to clean and affordable energy. I hope this course can be a stepping stone for me in educating people about generating electricity from the sun.

This Course as it claims is an introductory course, but it does provide some Deep insights into the contemporary solar tech and its prospects, the best part of this course is the way prof.Smets starts from the most conspicous of concepts like the sun,Solar system etc., and build up the concepts upto to the manufacture of 3rd gen solar cells and their deployments into modules keeping in mind their environomental and ecenomical aspects. After doing this course you'll definitely end up appreciating the merits of going Solar. It motivated me so much that i'm now seriously considering doing my masters in Energy engg albeit being an electronics and comm. enggineering major in undergraduation.

This course for me it's a dream come true. I had the opportunity of attending a workshop in Abuja, Nigeria on using technology in teaching in higher education. One of the resource persons mentioned edx and what its all about. When I checked it out I saw this Sola energy course, something I have been looking for a long time. I have completed the course, five assignments and three exams. Am now looking forward to receiving a verified certificate. Hopefully I will leverage the lessons and skills acquired to launch my solar energy career. I will recommend this course to anybody wishing to start or improve his skills on this subject.

I thought this course was extremely informative and was everything it was hyped up to be. The explanations provided by the instructor were very well done. Unfortunately, I had to drop this class due to issues with life, but will be taking it next time around if/when it is offered again. I would recommend this course highly.

Good overview of solar energy. Homework and problem sets include practical applications with step by step explanations. I recommend students use a spreadsheet for most of the math.

Solar Energy is word wide accepted source of Renewable Energy, which is environment friendly and almost maintenance free. Solar Energy through SPV is converted into Electrical energy which can be stored into battery. The electrical energy stored in battery can be used during hazy/nights. Further, this course will give a new learning experience.
